Can anyone tell us please, what do you do about such things as a "Home Address" for the purpose of Banks & tax office & centrelink?
We are planning to sell up, buy a mobile home & travel & have no idea of the problems we may encounter ... Anyone with experience of this please advise?
Thanks
Bob & Marina

Hi ozbob999, try going to your local Australia Post office and have a chat with them, I’m sure they can set you up with a postal system that will follow you around.
Cheers

Good luck, but dont hold your breath. Our system is not yet user friendly to what you wish to do. It seems to require one to have a "permanent address" somewhere,PO boxes not adequate but if its a bush address you may just get away with it. Banks are banks, access everywhere. Tax office-que? If you are pensioners surely they are going to pay via your bank a/c. My humble advice - let the enjoyment be yours, the problems be their's!
cheers and happy wandering

There are mail forwarding services,,landbase australia is one which comes to mind and there are others,,,there is also the problem of insurance which cant be held if there is no residence as such, many use their childrens address, the cmca has more information probably is a good idea to join if you are going to be on the road fulltime

Consider visiting an accountant before you leave - might be all sorts of loopholes you could exploit... errrr... minimise your tax liabilities :)

Also consider _both_ of you drawing up a power of attorney for someone you _really_ trust. A child maybe?

Personally I'd just tell everyone I was moving in with my son/friend/lover/whoever and tell them I no longer have a landline just a mobile phone. Have Aus Post redirect your mail to new address for 12 months. Ask son/lover etc to open all your mail (except those ones marked "From the Adult Fun Company" :) and let you know about anything urgent.

I think you'll need a pseudo "real" address otherwise the simple people at places like Vic Roads/RTA get all confused.

If you can, have your mail re-directed to a family member or friend as your permanent address. Then once every month, or when ever you feel your in a spot you are going to hang around in for a while, just get you relatives or friends to forwarded all the mail on in one box.

This keeps all your mail together and you always know where it is.

Cheep and reliable.

Andrew is right.

Very long time friends of ours have done 2 large trips, and I received & paid their accounts, everything.

On their first trip, I also received his films, and had the slides processed. He would call me each week, to see if any extra in camera adjustments were needed.

What with faxes & email, I think the trusted friend is the way to go.

Cheers

Wolfie

PS... send your bank details to ianbee@........ LOL!

Also you can have Aust Post hold all your mail at a given PO & when you are approaching a place where you want to stay for a while drop into a PO & complete an order to redirect to that place (PO) for a given time.
A fellow traveller told me it works well for him over a few years.
Maybe have all junk mail sent to Parlt House Canberra as they put out lots of junk!

We went on the wallaby for 5 years

Had a mobile phone and had a Telstra Card to pay the bill, monthly.
We organised a POBox before we left and paid AustPost to forward our mail from time to time. In the end how ever we didn't bother with that even. We let people know where we were going to be and collected our mail there. Most contact these days can be done via email. For vehicle regos you can furnish a caravan park address and make sure you pay the rego before it is due. I had mates who had their van registered in Victoria and their 4by in WA and they spent most of their time in Queensland

It was a great time of our lives..... so go and enjoy yourself

Hi Ozbob999

I know you've had lots of replies to this, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth too. We spent 6 months on the road, and had our mail forwarded through a company we found on this site, called Mail Away. We simply gave their address as our address and we would contact Mail Away to forward our mail to wherever we were going to be. It is all sent by express post, and we didn't have one slip up, even to really remote places. Its not free, but we thought it was worth the money. We also found Australia Post was a bit unreliable, and occasionally forgot to forward mail! We did pay things like vehicle registration, phone bills etc over the net, but that can be really frustrating at times, especially in the more remote places where the phone lines weren't so easily available.

Have a fantastic time, you lucky things
Anni
