We have just purchased a Patrol getting ready for the big trip, and were woundering if we should do the vehicle out with draws and roof rack or if we should leave the vhicle as is and get a trailer to carry all the gear. I'm hope this will course a great debate. All comments welcome.
PS. travelling in the car is wife me and dog.

With only 3 of you if you can't get the gear in the vehicle then you've got too much. Towing is a pain in the butt

Guys,

I'll start by saying, I don't have a trailer, prefer a tent, hate dragging something behind me yada yada yada - but I guess my next thought is 'what sort of 'big trip??''

We've only done 'medium' trips of three to four weeks and find a tent to be fine - but much longer than that and you might find it a bit of a bind.

While I hate towing offroad, if you are doing mostly blacktop, that would also lend towards being fine for a trailer (I'm not saying offroad trailers can't cope - just that I don't like towing offroad)

Be interested in what your 'big trip' is..

Who gets to sit up front, the wife or the dog?

I get better directions from the dog, looks better too. ;)

I'd go with drawers and roof rack, trailers are a pain on single bush tracks, parking in shopping centres etc.

Now now Pat.......you'd better be careful or it will be YOU who's in the dog-house......you're either very brave or very silly for making a comment like that about your better half....LOLOL

Now, back the question....I tow a trailer everybloodywhere and am now so used to it, I feel naked if I'm not towing. However, I have the "excuse" that I've got 3 young blokes as well as my cheese&kisses to cater for on our trips.

For sure, if it was just Annette and me on our own (maybe in 20 years time), there's no way I'd be lugging a trailer around. Deck out the back with fridge and slots/cubby holes etc and add a roof rack etc.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Except if the shopping centre car park happens to be multi level in which case the roof rack won't get in.

I tow a camper and hate roof racks. I also have a storage system. I am a bit like Roachie and feel strange without the camper. Even the Missus is happy towing the camper now that she is used to it. We still regularly do 1000km days. But were not starting in a cpital city.

As soon as I lose the kids I will pack everything in the car and put nothing on the roof.

If you need a trailer make it a camper and enjoy the ease of set up and the extra comfort.

As someone who needs to tow a trailer . . . don't.

As it seems you only want to carry "gear" , not a Campertrailer . . .

Fit out the vehicle.

As mentioned above , for 2 and a dog , if you cant fit it in the Patrol , you are carrying too much.

Do both. Installing drawers in the vehicle means you can "get at things" much easier and also stack more in more securely (don't forget the cargo barrier).
If your doing the BIG trip then tow a camper trailer as well. You can always leave the trailer if you want to do a few days solo somewhere, but for extended camping the camper trailer will be a blessing.

Thanks all for the comments all taken on board.

The wife sits up front only cause she complains more than the dog if shes in the back.

A gear trailer will add a few MPG to your fuel bill & may limit where you can go at times. It will however take a great load off the car as I suspect at least 50 % of all tourists out central Oz are loaded above the GVM. For an extended trip a camper trailer would probably make more sense giving you a set up kitchen & a decent bed. Cheers Craig.................
