Has anyone had any experience with Geocaching? Specifically I was looking for a list of 4wd type Geocache adventures.

If there is anyone that has never heard of Geocaching, www.geocaching.com.

This looks like much more fun tho:

From GeoDashing

Geodashing is a game in which players use GPS receivers on a playing field that covers the entire planet. The waypoints, or dashpoints, to be reached are randomly selected. The win goes to who can get to the most dashpoints; that is, if you can get to them at all! Each game has a new set of dashpoints making each game completely different and unpredictable. Join and play!

It's always something that i've wanted to become involved in. I'd love to see if our 4WD club might pick it up as a bi-monthly excercise or something.

I have a friend who did one cache on our last trip to Birdsville. There is one close to Big Red. I think the general gist is to leave something there and update a notebook on who you are, what date you found it etc. We left a little toy.

I have done some Geocaching. It's quite good fun.

If you want some that involve 4wding then try some from this guy. Such as this one. This isn't a 4wd cache but some from the same guy are. I don't think there is any way to search for a 4wd cache specifically however if you know of a specific 4wd area you want to go then put the GPS coordiates into the search function of the Geocaching website and see what's in the area.

glenn, ive been into this for a while. you cannot specifically search for 4x4 caches, but if you go into there site you can look up caches in a specific location. eg i'm only back from fraser island yesterday before i left i searched my route a couple on fraser and a few between noosa and rainbow beach. ive placed a new one yet to be activated at sandy cape because of the remoteness this will be rarely logged. so from this example you would have 6-8 caches only accessable by 4x4.
ive cached while on extended trips to sa and tas it takes you to some great spots, deserts and deserted beaches where good navigation and map reading has been needed. i recently tracked one down by 4x4 that had not seen anyone in 2 years.
spend some time at there site and you will get the hang of it and there forums will give you recomended cache locations.

Peter,

Yeah, it's the not being able to search for 4wd type caches that i was hoping to get around.

I am actually heading for Fraser for new years eve, and was planning on planting my own as well. I was considering making a decent effort and create a few 4wd type caches on our semi-regular jaunts around SE-QLD. But I’m not sure how to identify them so that they are searchable. Maybe if I include "4WD" in the title??? I tried a keyword search on this without much luck!

Where about is the 2yo one you found?

Hi Pete,

You didn't find Fraser Island Frolic did you by any chance?? - That's one that we set there in Jan this year - only had the one registered hit so far - as you say, a bit remote

ivan, noted FIF but was was not near our route this trip. trip 11 and our last few have taken us to Sandy Cape and Wathumba away from the crowds. Only picked up "Rainbow Warrior" on the beach heading back near noosa.

Glenn, by typing in postcodes is a good way to find them. put in rainbow beach or mount mee known 4x4 areas or similar in your state and look at individual cache logs. GCE78 was 21 months between visits.

I've been Geocaching for a few years now & its great fun. Best way to find the 4x4 sites is to look for an approx area that you would need a 4x4 to find one & search in that are (once you've found one, just radiate out to nearby caches. After a while you get to know which Geocachers prefer to leave 4x4 caches. Also check their logs because they often prefer that type as well. Finally, check the difficulty grading. Anything with a 1 or 2 can't be much of a 4x4 track. You may also like to look at this. http://www.virtual-cyberspace.com/geo/geoscene.htm
