My brother in law emailed me the link to this place as he feels I could get some help here as I am at an end.

Firstly let me please state that I don't want to start any arguments here I just need help.

I am in the market for either a new Landcruiser or Patrol and want to hear some real life experiences with either and what the opinions / strengths & weaknesses are of both vehicles. I am not towing but I still want the Turbo Diesel motor.

I have driven both but will keep my opinion to myself just for now.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Gazza

Hi Gazza
Don't want to start an argument eh!!
You would not go wrong with either vechicle, both are built tough and as reply's will show, go just about anywhere in Oz.
I have heard all the normal pro's and con's - but it appears that if the Turbo 100
series Cruiser was the same price as the Turbo Patrol. I believe more people would go for the Tojo.
Enjoy the arguments (oops sorry) comments comming your way.
Cheers for now
Mike

Gazza,

Welcome.....

This is probably THE most contested issue on this forum. Your brother is right, you WILL find out some info.

If you use the search option, you are sure to find lot's of info.

Funny thing is..... there is NEVER a definitive answer, because someone keeps asking, about every week or so......... perplexing to say the least.........

Cheers

This is my opinion on this subject i would go to the respective forums on the web that cater to one make (ie) lcool, 4x4patrol and get the info you want and don't tell them you have two vehicles in mind just ask them about their vehicle of choice then make up your own mind about which too choose !!

Saving arguements, Baz.

OK want a non bias opinion, looking at past comments on this subject and driven both vehicles your only choice is how much you are willing too spend, because both vehicle have there strentghs and weaknesses and as far as i can tell not much between them.

4.2TD in both.

I am doing the same as you only difference, we have a third vehicle in the choice.

Baz.

Firstly welcome to EO, manners i used to have them.

We have not decided as yet and it is hard because you have to please all that are involved, our choice involves towing too a 1.3t camper and comfort in the back seats as we have a third party that travels with us and i can tell you this for certain the cruiser and the patrol way way way behind in the comfort stakes in the back seats.

If i was buying just for me i would buy the live axle cruiser with the barn doors.

Good luck with whatever you choose and enjoy travelling and this forum.

Baz.

I get enough grief with the Explorer sorry SWMBO likes the other choice and i must admit i do too, you have made a good decision i feel. I will tell you this we really liked the Prado but it doesn't pull as well as the Explorer and don't want to go backward with power which was a bummer and strange to as the Prado has more KW than the Explorer so the other 3 are back to be concidered, oh we are buying second hand too up to 2002.

You should get a good deal on an Explorer , they are really struggling to move any of them at the moment. Ofcourse this good deal will be countered with an ugly sale price on the other end but I am sure you have factored that already.

Well no guesses which one i'd reccomend. *grin*

If you are looking at a new vehicle and money isn't an issue then go for LC100.

The main disadvantage with the LC Turbo is you get an IFS front end which isn't a problem unless you want to do some serious off road. Then I'd recomend front & rear diff locks.

I wanted a turbo live axle auto - and neither Toyo or Nissan do one so because the auto was more important than the live axle (to me) I went with the LC.

You will find a whole lot of views about the Nissan 3.0TD I think its safe to say that the concensus seems to be that Nissan have fixed the main known issue causing them to blow up. However I'd still go for the 4.2 even though its older tech.

You can get a turbo diesel auto 3.0 Patrol. All Patrols have coils and live axles.

Utemad

You're right of course - I didn't even consider the 3.0TD - At the time there were far too many questions over it. Plus I just couldn't bring myself to buy a 4cyl. Too stuck in my ways I guess.

Gazza, I don't drive either (Pajero owner) but have driven both. IMHO the LC is overpriced. The 3LT Patrol is just as capable as the Cruiser (duck...) and cost about 20K less for an St versus cruiser GXL.

Apparent weaknesses? The cruiser has a suspect front diff and IFS setup.
The Patrol HAD problems with early model 3LT engines. Appears to be fixed now.

The Nissan will probably get you better fuel economy, seeing as how you don't tow anything.

Now I'll duck for cover.....

Thanks for the info guys.

My opinion after a hard road test drive is the Landcruiser is certainly quieter and more car like , corners much more neutrally and is juts more comfortable and convenient in every possible way. I think the motor is more thoughtfully laid out for potential repairs but the lower front end could cause issues if I decide to get in the thick stuff.

My brother in law has a T/D Sahara 2 years old done 95,000k with a 3 inch exhaust all the way through. Also has it chipped to 500nm's so the thing bloody flies. I have heard you can chip the Patrol as well any experience in this anybody ?

I am certainly leaning to cruiser as it is just a nicer vehicle with the pedigree as well.

Hi In hock,

I have the Dtronic chip on my 3.0TD and it now has 420Nm at 2,000rpm, almost the same as the 4.2TD cruiser at 424Nm. Makes a noticeable difference, especially at the bottom end where the 3.0TD was lacking a bit.

I went through the same dilema a year ago when replacing my 80 series cruiser. Overall, the cruiser has better attention to fit and finish, but could not bring myself to a IFS front end. I drove the 4.2TD nissan but much prefered the 3.0TD (but understand the reasons why many still prefer the 4.2TD). After 1 year and 30,000kms, I am very happy with my choice (as I am sure I would have been regardless of Nissan, Cruiser or 4.2TD)

At the end of the day, IMHO, the Nissan is slightly more compromised to off-road use while the cruiser is more compromised to on-road use. A generalisation I know, but when you look at the suspension, spring and shock settings, fit and finish etc... it does hold up to a fair degree.

What swayed me in the end was that the money I saved allowed the patrol to be fully fitted out for my needs. If i went the cruiser, I would still have a big wish list. But in 2 years when i replace this vehicle, who knows which way i will go, both are very good vehicles and I am sure you will be happy with either.

Cheers

Captain

I went for the 4.2 Patrol when I was looking for a replacement vehicle, and it was only on price (the purse strings wouldn't streach any further). If I had my way the LC would have been the one. Toyota are a far better finish and the A/C doesn't cut out when the temp goes up one notch, wihich is a pain with the GU.

Off road wise there is nothing between them, they both need AM springs and shocks and tyres of your choice. It's just the little things that make the LC a better vehicle.

This is my way of thinking as well. I am sure an experienced 4wd'er could get any vehicle further than my abilities will allow me and as this vehicle will spend the majority of it's life as a drive car I am keen on the Landcruiser as it is so much nicer to drive versus the noisy truck like behaviour of the Nissan .

If it was going to be a 4wd hack type of vehicle which I would thrash and bash then I would certainly get the Patrol but at my age I want some comfort as well.

My 3.0L has never had an air con cut out even when towing on those hot northerly windy days, must only be the 4.2 that has this problem.

I have previously well documented my results with over-warming on the 4.2L and how I overcame it so the air con would not cut out. Okay, so it cost me $1100- for a shiny new PWR radiator with 2 x 26mm cores instead of the plastic unit with 2 x 12mm cores. But it did the trick.

Other than that, I bought my Patrol because it is capable of doing everything I want to do, cost shyt-loads less than a GXL and (IMHO) has a stronger drive train.

If I was not into "bush driving" (as opposed to "Off-roading") and spent all day on the bitumen, a GXL would have been my preference; but I wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway!!! LOLOL

Good luck.

Ok it is all over now.

Just placed an order on a GXL T/D Landcruiser Auto for $63,840 with NSW rego. I have specified that I want 05 built and complied to it wont be here until end of Feb . This loses me a $1,000 dollar Mitre 10 voucher on offer atmo but I don't think it is worth it for the 2004.

All accessories I am adding after delivery due to LCT considerations.

Can't wait !!!

Can't read all of this as the forum is just too big. Did you see who won the "4wd of the year" this year? Patrol, and it was last years model.
Apparantly Toyota have gone for the "majority of sales" and the new Landcruiser is "softer" than ever before as it is the city yuppies who buy them mostly. Not a problem if you intend on upgrading with accessories though.
They actually gave Toyota quite a bagging in the write up. They didn't even supply one model even though they had 3 months to produce one for the testing.
Patrol and Toyota both will need money spent to be a reliable veh off road though and then both will be as tough as each other, just that you may need to spend a little bit more on the Cruiser.
Enjoy,
