Recently made my first ever river crossings in the patrol ( a '90 4.2D swb). Did everything right (I think). Before the trip I'd made sure the breathers were adequate and that the
snorkel actually went where it ought to once it entered the engine bay. When I came to the rivers I got out and waded through the waist deep
water (which had recently been snow I might add) and found the bottom was adequate for driving. Then put my blind across the front as the
water was up to near the top of the bullbar.
Got back in the car and turned the heating on in the footwells till the blood in my feet started circulating again and then headed across in 2nd low without touching the clutch all the way.
It all worked a treat on both the rivers though my girlfriend did get wet feet as the seals on the passenger door aren't what they were.
My questions after all that are
1. How long should I have sat beside the river before heading across to allow the diffs and clutch etc to cool and stop them sucking
water in through the seals, or am I being overcautious?
2. Is a blind is needed in a simple diesel with no electrics, except the dashboard clock!! I've heard mixed reports and I'm sure I'm opening myself up to a few more?
PS Thanks to the guys who answered the myall lakes question. I'll be enjoying
the beach and lake in a couple of weekends hopefully.

Answers IMHO are;
1. You should wait at least a half hour if the diffs, etc are hot.
2. A blind should be used in that depth of
water regardless.
You should also check that
water hasn't entered in through the speakers in the doors, I always plug up the drain holes in my doors with bluetack for that reason. It is also a good preventer of bull dust coming through the speakers, etc.
Unplug them in the winter if you're not in the bush.

1) Depends on how long you have been driving for.. If its 5 hours of hard driving, then have a coffee, wee, take some photos, walk it, then if your unsure, jump under and hold the diff, feel how hot it is. If you have been just crusing for half hour, maybe 20mins COULD be ok... All depends on the day, type of driving etc.
2) You have a
snorkel, then if your system is waterproof (No leaks in the air intake system) I cant see why you would need a blind. I've had
water on my lifted GQ over the bonnet onto the screen before with no blind, in hindsight I probably should have had one for that depth.
The blind should do more than the top of the bullbar.
it should go from under the car, tie to the diff, up and open the bonnet, and go right to the back of the engine bay, so any
water that get son the blind goes up under the bonnet, straight up the windscreen and out.. then tie it to the side mirrors to give you total coverage. It may seem like a wank, but whats an engine worth. This also gives you more time for things to cool down to a better temp.
Now that you have done some creeks, it would pay to remove the Manual hub from the front and check for
water leaks.
Mine leaked like snot and the wheel bearings were seriously shot.
$110 a side for both bearings and the large inner seal from Bursons. Probably cheaper to do bearings $25ea from Frankston Bearings, and then Nissan for the seal, probably $20, but it was late Saturday when I was shopping, had no choice.. :(
Use Silastic to reseal the hub back on.

one of the most common damage ive seen {not includeing
water through the electrics} is the cooling fan hittng the
water and the blades bending forwards wit the thrust chewing out the raditor.very costly and unless you good at sealing 40-60 rows of the raditator ....its a tow away job. always use a blind as said from near the diff to over the bonnet.

We were up in the snowies for a few days. The initial plan had been to cross the
Murray river at the ford at
Tom Groggin and go to Mt Pinnabar in Vic but the river was quite deep and I'd forgotten my submarine.
Next plan was instead a day trip up at Geehi which is a few km further north up the Alpine way. We crossed the Swampy plains river (waist deep for me at 6ft5) and then a smaller (but still full of snowmelt)
Bogong creek before driving on West and coming out on the Alpine way via Major Clews track. We did it on the first day of the trip and it then rained for a couple of days making the crossings even more treacherous so we just climbed Kosciuoszko instead.

Looks like one of those runs where the suns almost gone and your desparate to get back to
camp and its either thru the sea or another 2hrs around.
Been there many times.
Or is the photo just under devoloped.....LOL
