Hi all, I need some advice on CDMA mobile phone to computer to internet connection. We have just purchased a Acer Extensa 2300 laptop. It has a built in modem so landline connection is not a problem. What is the best setup for using a mobile for access? I have a Bigpond account so can use it most
places that have coverage with a CDMA. The computer does not have IR or a serial port so the connection will be USB. I have a cord for my Nokia but it is serial ... now an expensive tie down !! My mobile contract comes up again in the new year so a change of phone is not a problem. Any advice welcome.

Must have had a memory fade ! ! Dug out my Nokia cord and guess what ?? it's USB. That solves one problem but when I load the Nokia Suite software and try and set it up it only gives me options for Comm 1-4. It I use Comm4 it appears to recognise the phone (2280) but will not connect via the modem which appears to be locked onto Comm3. Might have to do some delving to find the solution.

GeeTee.
You may be able to use USB to Serial converter.
Telstra have 1xRTT high speed connection available in main centres. Maybe expanded over time.
We use CDMA email connection while bush. Just remember speed out in the bush. Photo's ect will take quite some time unless you doctor them.

Hi,
Don't use your normal internet account to dial in. Subscribe to Mobile Internet. It is much cheaper, especially off-peak.
Maximum speed only 14.4k.. I s ok for email etc, bit slow everything else. Next option is 1x, but does not work everywhere cdma does.
Cheers

Hi guys,
Of course Telstra don't want you to use your MY Hour for the internet - not making them any profit!! We have just spent 6 months on the road and used the CDMA on My Hour frequently to check our emails, and lots of travellers do.
I can't help with the connection problems because I got my computer nerd brother to set it up for me - but it did work
well!
Cheers

Thanks Bruce, I would have expected it to be a free number during "free hour". I have the data transfer cable and have got the phone to talk to the computer but I am having trouble configuring the modem to go on the same "psuedo" com4 that the phone uses. Will stick with it and hope someone will come up with an answer.

I connect all the time on the free My Hour with my Hyundai TX60B and USB cable. The calls on the account are logged as data but are still free.
I believe, if you renew your contract before it expires, you can keep your free My Hour. I just out right purchased another Hyundai TX60B mobile phone so I did not upset my contract and free My Hour as I have two phone numbers. The Hyundai TX60B software is great and allows you to access all features of the phone. Best phone and software I have had to connect to the Internet. Worked first time and know heaps of others with the same set-up. Wish you luck with your Nokia from what I have seen with others.
Telstra now have 10 hour dial-up plans to the Internet for mobile phones for $29.95 a month.
