I know this has been done before and i have searched archives but i am still after a coule of answers to what seem to be
grey areas. I have finally bit the bullet so to speak and booked the GQ in next week to have a Crane conversion done to the distributor, hence making it electronic ignition.....cost $330 installed and tuned. After a few calls to different auto sparkies i am getting different stories on wether i can use the existing coil or not. The guy doing it said not needed..done heaps of them mate he said..never any probs. Others have said it is compulsory to change coil at additional cost of $90 -$130 depending on brand. I am willing to take the advice from the guy doing the job but just interested to hear
views from people who have done the conversion. This conversion is supposed to fix all the tuning probs with the TB42 on gas. ( those who have one will know) Thanks in advance........

What problems are you having on Gas ?
I would change the coil . It can work fine for years , but the fact is it will struggle under the electronic ignition. If the coil is quite new , it can last for yonk , a older coil fill die a quick death.

Fitted a transistor assisted ignition kit from DS about 3 years ago. Left dist. and coil as original and have had no problems at all. Starts every time, runs much more smoothly, no need to install new points every 10K kms as before. Definetely recommeded. And it only cost about $60.00
