hi everyone,

just went down to a new camping store in melbourne called anaconda an bought a cobb cooker for $150

so tonight its roast lamb for dinner, i read through the archives and it seems that i should use 8 heat beads, should i put the vegies in at the same time as the lamb?

i'll let you know how it turns out

thanks

That's good buying. I had a look at one yesterday in Bris and it was $199. I would be interested how yours turns out as it would cost less if I got one from your man and freighted it up here.

Don't skimp on the heat beads or the fire lighters, and make sure that they are all burning before you leave it for the half hour or so for the heat beads to change colour. We haven't used ours very often, but I couldn't see why I would need 3 firelighters to start a few heat beads, so only used one and not all the heat beads got going, hence we had to finish cooking in microwave as it didn't have enough heat to cook food.

SWMBO said that she does it similar to a normal oven, if it is a big piece of meat she puts that in first and then later adds the veggies.

It is one of those things that you have to experiment a bit with, and it is best to do it at home where you have other means of cooking if things don't work out too good the first few times.

A tip for heatbead lighting:

Only use one firelighter in the middle of the fire area. Place 3 or 4 heatbeads around it. Light the firelighter. Then, using tongs, stack the other heatbeads on top of the first ones you put in to form a pyramid. This way, the heat propagates far more quickly though the stack. Once they are well and truly underway - flatten the stack of heat beads with your tongs. Ready to cook!

Intel gathered from decades of heat bead use in Webbers......

it was a success, next time i'll put the spuds on a bit earlier

the meat was real tender, and the spuds golden brown

cant wait to test it out again this weekend

Mr Z - you consider it something that might take over most cooking duties while camping? Apart from the startup time (and who cares - aren't we away in the bush and don't care what time it is anyway?) is it easy to clean?

i'll probably only use it for roasts (to start with anyway) so i'll still be taking the rest of my cooking gear when i go camping

the gas stove/fire is alot easier if you just want to boil water or cook a few snags etc...

it was pretty easy to clean the roasting tray is non-stick so that is no problem, the rest i just used a scourer, all cleaned up ok ready for next time

i'd like try a damper out as well on the weekend, just gotta track down a good recipe

they're in the outer eastern suburbs
corner of cantebury rd, and bayswater rd, Bayswater
its a fairly big place so it's easy to spot
when i got mine there weren't too many left so if bayswater is out of your way, it might pay to give them a call ph. 03 8720 4000

good luck

We have one & its great, try the damper recipe in the book. we use coopers pale ale beer & it gives a great taste & the damper is still good the next day, if theres any left that is. just be patient with the cooking times & do things as the manufacturer says in the book & you should be fine.
Some people use metho to fuel theirs....DO NOT DO THIS!
