Hi,
I have an 92 nh pajero 5 speed and just recently after a long trip Ive noticed or heard a knocking sound comming from the gear box, while stationary with the clutch in it disapears but there with clutch out and whilst driving. Have been told that it sound like I taken a tooth of a gear and would require a rebuild. Can any one tell if this sounds right and if so how long would the box last like this as the kind of money it would to repair is way past my budget. Any comment would be appreciated... Thanks
Harry

Is it the rattle some gearboxes get whilst in neutral? Sometimes a change of oil can quieten it. As you say it goes when the clutch is depressed.
My 91 Triton does it & has for some time and I recently completed a 10,000kms trip to FNQ without trouble. I am not sure if the box in your NH is the same as
mine
but they are a bit weak in 5th gear dept and if they start to growl much its probably time for new bearings which are not that expensive but neglecting it could be expensive. If theres no noise under load in 5th & other gears it should fine
but get a second opinion.
You can also pick up gearboxes thru the Trader Mags brand new for around $1550
which saves labor on fitting new parts & may
well be cheaper. As said check out Paj Club site.
