hey everybody, i'm looking at dropping a new motor in my '87 4runner and have been looking at the commodore VR 3.8L V6. However this would mean buying a new gearbox aswell. I have been recently thinking about puttinga 4Runner V6 in (from a later model) as i would presume that i wouldn't need a new 'box and it would bolt straight up (so less costs for fitting). Only problem being that i haven't been able to find anything useful on the internet about it. Does anyone know if this would be worth doing? can someone point me in the direction of someone who does it? knows about it etc?

Thanks in anticipation.

positive you need another box? I thought that this was a straightforward dido job with a few specialists in that area. If you havnt already give one a call they should be able to give you an up front price. I would expect it would be a better propasition than a tojov6. Also if anything I know about Toyota is true then the gearbox probably isnt a straightforward fit between motors

mark's will do a kit for $925 plus extras. this is for a standard series 2 v6 3.8 bolting to a toyota 5 speed box. But you havent seent the extra's, wireingloom, flywheel, engine warning light,BCM,engine mounts and who knows what else these all cost extra money. Then you got to get a motor. good luck

Hi Check out ebay at the moment...complete prado 3.4 motor for 700 bux...comes with box i think....now u could still get parts for this anywhere as the new onews have this motor...second choice would be a 5,6 or 7mge from a supra/cressida...apparently a nice fit. Ask on www.outerlimits4x4.com

Instead of converting yours, can I interest you in a ARB converted 90 model dual cab HiLux?? Already has the series two commodore V6 in it. These were put together by ARB as the manufacturer on the compliance plate.

Paddo,
I had A '91 4 Runner and had a VT Commodore engine conversion done. (replaced the old 2.4 petrol motor) Went like a stung cat.
Used the original manual gearbox with a bell housing adaptor.
Got all the kit from Marks Adaptors in Melbourne and had a workshop do the job.
Believe me, the increase in POWER is fantasic.
But then, along came 2 kids and all the associated gear, so I needed something bigger, enter the Patrol.
I still miss the 3.8 litre 4runner from time to time............
anyway, check out MArks Adaptors. They have all the information you need.
