Have recently purchased a GU Patrol TD42 which kindly came with ingrained cigarette odor...apart from that in excellent nick. Can anybody help me with any surefire method of eliminating the smells and returning the vehicle to some neutral state of aroma. Its funny how sensitive yr nose becomes after giving up the darts after 40 years....
any advice appreciated

If the febreeze doesn't work, get DRYTRON to give the seats a going over and a de-oderize, should help

dont forget the roof lining as
well, Meguires have a great interior vinyl & leather cleaner / conditioner that looks like milk and as
well as making it look new again, has a grouse 'new car' smell which masks a lot of odours.

Bradley has hit the nail right on the head ....... clean the headlining, this is where most of the smell will emanate from.
Until you remove the source of the smell, everything else will just be a cover up!

Choco,
I know this sounds bizarre but the following solution works.
Buy one or two pineapples and sit them in an ice cream bucket in the car and close it up overnight. They will absorb the smells.
My wife works for a national carpet cleaner and this is what they advise customers to do if they have persistent bad car smells and to the best of my knowledge it works
well.
Cheers
Brian

Hi,
Just place the whole pineapple in the car. The container is just to stop any juice leaking out and you don't put anything else in with it.
Their carpet cleaning guys swear by it.
Cheers

The smell is in the tobacco tar. Everything has to be scrubbed from top to bottom.
Plenty of airing helps, but some smell will return in hot, humid
weather.
Air fresheners have a chemical to disrupt your sense of smell and a scent to mask. However some smells like ciggies, pets and urine are hard to get rid of.
Best of luck.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned either of the 2 "old reliable" odour absorbers, charcoal & bi-carbonate of soda...
Either on its own will do a pretty good job, together, even better...
Get something like an ice-cream container, cover the bottom with charcoal, & liberally sprinkle the bi-carb over the charcoal... leave the (open) container in the car w/- windows up for a few days, & the smell will actually be absorbed, not masked...
May need repeating a few times initially, & occasionally thereafter, but it works!
(I know this, because I locked the car one evening without realising that that the bl***y cat was in there!!! ..'nuff said!)...

Just clean out the ash tray and fill it will Karpet powder. You can buy it at Woolies for about $7. Empty and refill every 3 months or so. Besides getting rid of the cigarette smell - it also supresse those other things - eg like when the grandson lays a cookie in the nappy etc etc

Choco,
If the car was a smokers car and the air cond run on recycle all the time then you will probably get a foul smell from there as well. So nit might bnmay to get that treated as well and then run on fresh air for a while.

I have used some vanilla, poured into a saucer and left in the vehicle for 24 hours with some good effect. I think the other suggestions are also good. Scrubbing the headlining makes sense.

choco,
all the old wives tales sound great but if you wont to get the smell out for good find some one with and ozone generator and eliminate them. Ozone will destroy the odour causing molecule and completly remove it, and will not leave any residue.
I work for a commerical A/C company in
sydney and we do this for fire damaged buildings and also to kill bacteria and the like. We could do it for you if you were local and would cost about $20.00 and take about half an hour. If you are not in
Sydney find a friend that has a new spa and ask if you can borrow there ozone generator it will take about an hour with a smaller one and you will need to run the vehicle with the A/C on to make sure the ozone goes through the system to deoderise this as well. That way you can save the pinapple for the fruit salad.

Just reading all the thread on this odour thing and have just got up from rolling on the floor laughing at some of the answers. (the old hanky is pretty moist also) One of the good things about the site is the fact that you can get serious and correct advice and also get a laugh out of some replies.

Oil of wintergreen is a natural neutraliser of tobacco smoke. Dont ask me where u get it, maybe look aup essential oils place. Spray it but not sure if it marks fabric or paint so be careful.
