Hi all,
Can anyone advise on the 'best' oil for a 6.5 GMC diesel. I have searched the net to no avail and have asked several mechanics, all giving different opinions. Does anyone have a operations manual to refer to and advise the correct oil as listed in said manual?
Thanks
Mick

Contact Brunswick Diesel. they do the most installations of these things in Aussie.. they would have the best idea.
also your location would make a difference.

Brunswick wouldn't know there a$$ from their elbow.
I don't see how a location will help anyone supplying info on the correct type of oil for this motor.
Thanks anyway.

You obviously dont know what the numbers/weights of oil means? Look it up and then get back to me. Go with 50/90 oil....

Question was oil listed in the manual. You can't tell me what it is.
I am aware of different areas and operating temperatures but that wasn't the question now was it.

Just any good quality 15w-40 Diesel oil. e.g. - Castrol, Valvoline, Shell.
Don't forget a new oil filter every 5000km too. All cheaper than rings and bearings.

PS: the 6.2L and 6.5L are only the petrol versions of the Chev and Buick converted to diesel. So they are robust but not advanced technically as the Jap diesels. Although good quality oil is always important it's not too critical for these donks.

Truckster you obviously haven't understood the question. I am after the oil as specified in the manual. Others have given me the info I was looking for. Thank you to those people. :)
I am not interested in the grade of oil which might suit me if I was travelling in the sahara or the antarctic. Just what is listed in the manual.
Man you must be bored. Go find someone else to bother will ya.

My 6.2 manual quotes
-18-38oC SAE 15W-40
0-38oC SAE 30
SF/CD quality preferred
SF/CC quality acceptable
Do Not Use SAE 10W-40 or Any other grade not recommended / Q
Don't know if 6.5 specs are different?

The military manuals for my Humvee with 6.2 and the later ones with 6.5 specify 15W-40 for temps above -15C
I asked Linquip for their suggestion and they said either Shell (can't remember the name) or Castrol RX super.
Any brand name diesel oil of the correct rating should suffice, they are a pretty robust engine. Make sure you change it at 5k intervals and I change the filter at the same time.
