My early 80 sreies TD fuel pump seems to be pumping more fuel ou the side than into the motor. Does this mean that an expensive fix is needed. It did have a slow leak about a year ago but stopped by itself after about a month now it is really coming out so I am not driving it.

Anyone had this prob before?

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong but on a 2H injecter pump a 10mm headed bolt has a copper/metal washer under it and needs replaceing.

an 80 series fuel pump is a rotary desighn and is lubricated by diesal making them susceptable to low sulphur diesal coz they are used to high sulphur. An 2h has an inline pump which is oil lubed and dont suffer this problem. If you are in WA get the summer issue of western 4wd in this Rob Robson does an article on the problem and the usual suspects that need replacing due to low sulphur. They are relitively inexpensive for fuel pumps. Having said that fuel pumps are one of the most complex things on a diesal motor So I would suggest taking it to a reputable pump specialist (If you state your are online other forum writers may be of assistance)

Just had my 80 series pump done.
They remove the top plate and replace the top pump gasket/seal and on mine they replaced the throttle shaft and seal as well.
Apparently the new seals are OK with the low sulphur diesel. Time will tell.
You should be able to get it done for less than a couple hundred bucks.

Hey 80scruiser thanks for the reply. Is yours on the 1HDT or naturally aspirated because last year for replacing the seals on the car for just the "cold start basket"????, they told me $300. If all the seals need doing it may be much more up to $1200 because they have to remove it and bench test it and put it back together again. Just wanting to know if this sounds rediculous or not?

Thoughts?

Mine is a natural 1HZ after market turbo.
They are different fuel pumps and there are alot of variables in the pricing like Km travelled, wear inside etc. I would shop around as that costs you nothing but time.
