I want to put a second battery in my2000 Mazda B2500 diesel. The quotes I have had are very expensive. Is a fancy isolator needed or are there simple systems which work.

G'Day Phil,
A simple and cheap way is to fit your second battery in a cradle wherever you can and link the two battery's together, putting a simple isolator switch on the positive lead between them.
You still run everything off your main battery but disconnect the isolator when stationary for any extended period of time using power ie.fridge, lights, stereo ect.
Before starting your vehicle, re-engage the isolator switch so the second battery effectively jump starts your vehicle.
Standard 60 series Landcruiser set-up.
Regads,
Marty.

I would just get someone to check the type of alt that you have, long term/sort term the wrong setup can do damge to it. Not saying don't do it, a little money spent now etc etc...
