Hi all,
Just had my 100K service done today on my 3.6 Petrol Jackaroo. All items done except "Adjust valve clearance".
I dont use a Holden Dealer & my mechanic doesn't think it necessary to do the valve clearance - says it is a major job & I would need to take it to a Holden Dealer if I did want it done.
Has anyone had any experience of this - I think I have read previously that many Holden Dealers don't do the valves either?
Any info would be appreciated
Willy

What kind of money were you charged for the 100k service?

Hi
Nobby
I supplied my own oil (use synthetic supplied by my son in law) & cost was $290. Labour $110 Parts $176.15 Waste etc $3.85. Most of the parts cost were replacement platinum plugs.
Was very happy with the cost - was expecting it to be much higher.

That's excellent .... beats the $1000+ cost where you may or may not get your valves done by a dealer.

General consensus amongst Jackaroo owners here is not to do the valve adjustment until your valves start ticking.
Keep your servicing and oil changes up to date and you may
well extend the requirement for a valve adjustment out for quite a while.

Thogh talking the 3.0 L diesel, I had personal experience of them billing me and accepting payment for valve adjustment on the TD while not taking the rocker box off !! (that is fraud in my view). They would take $500 off you for for valves alone I'd expect ! Its a bugger of a job on the TD - might be just as bad on the V6.
Mine runs sweet at present, so
mine are staying unchecked until I find someone good that I can trust on it.

Willy, I had the tappets done on my 3.5 petrol Jack at 100,000 some years ago at a Holden dealer. I know they actually did the job because they had it for 4 days waiting for different size shims to be ordered in, and then when I finally picked it up it was leaking oil from one rocker cover (bloody hopeless). They claimed it was now within spec and I would have thought the tappets would be silent, but it sounded no different from before. And talking about the cost ..... I'd rather not.
I agree with Savvas - leave the tappets and focus on regular oil and lube.
Rob.

Peace of mnd compromise would be to check clearances when next getting work done! Some of these valve setups using shims, close up (the 4.5 cruiser does) and when this happens, valves start burning without any ticking noises at all.
Fuel used is the main culpret, LPG is the worst.

Just had my 100k service a couple of weeks a go & had the same dilema about this. Ended up not doing either. Basically do it if it is noisey. Probably do it with the timing belt service.
Cheers

i just dont know ...if the valves are tapiing at least they got clearence. If they are quiet there is a chance tey are closeing up. When htey close up they dont seal on the valve
seat properly then you will burn your valves.
the reality is though with moden cars the heads are very stable. but over every 100 thousand start checking for valve
seat resession and stuffed guides,
shadow
very happy with a rattleing motor.

FWIW when
mine had the 100K they checked the clearances and they needed no adjustment. Then one of the new gaskets installed developed a leak and it cost me another visit and day off the road.
