More of an information
forum than a question. I have Cooper ST's on my patrol. After doing
Googs Track,
Gawler Ranges,
Birdsville, Strzlecki etc my back two tyres had some chipping and some lugs has cracks on the base.
Considering the life these tyres had (carrying alot of weight being the back two) I thought this was still acceptable. Thought I would still see how serious Coopers are about their 80,000km warranty.
The tyre supplier was on the phone for no more than 10 secs and they said that would do a swap with a brand new pair! Decided to pay the difference and try the new ST-C. This is a much softer rubber compound which you can actually push around with your fingers. The theory is that the rubber moulds around the rocks on the road, limiting the chipping from the hard compound of the ST. Fully tested in the NT just recently.
Anyway just thought that I would give credit where credit is due for Coopers. Providing customer service like that, they deserve to be
well supported by the 4wd community.

Well,
they would be, if they made tyres that handled, were good in the wet, and rode as nicely as some other brands............

I have St's on the 80 series and find them exceptional in the wet (meaning on tar) and ride
well. Better than most others I have had. Only done some easy light load trips so far but so far so good. What do you prefer. I will eventually wear these out and am always open minded.

I also have ST's on my Jackaroo & have done 25K, including
Cape York etc.
The handling in the wet on bitumen is great - best I've had - also overall handling good.
Just to even up the

Hi Gossy,
Tyres with any "lug design" (what ever the brand is) will suffer some damage over rocky ground, particularly gibber. Forget about the theory, and accept the fact that if you drive on these roads your rubber is in for a hard time. Weight, as you stated, is a big contributor to tyre damage.

Kim

We have got Bridgestone AT's on the F250 and BFG AT's on the caravan. The BFG caravan tyres received a lot more tread damage than the Bridgestone F250 tyres when we travelled through
Kimberley and
Pilbara areas.
After a Caravan blow out on the trip I replaced it with a Cooper ST while in
Darwin, and that is now the spare on the truck.
Good to see that Cooper give such good after sales service.

Have a set of ATs. I have one tyre that has a magnet for finding the:
a. Only nail on the
Oodnadatta Track, and
b. The only screw on the Roper Highway.
Both punctures have occured between the tread blocks. Since relegating the tyre to a spare I haven't had another puncture. Must have been Karma...........

Gossy - good to hear!
I run 245-75/16's and have knocked two major blocks off on the rears. I forgot to air-down one day and scrabbled a little too much on the rocks. Hey presto - loss of traction and fast over-spin causing the sides to bite into the rocks as I climbed. Had I gone down to 18 pounds like I normally do - it could have been a different story.
When you spoke with this bloke - did he insist on you showing that you have followed the 10,000km rotation plan before committing to two newies?
Cheers
Chris

No wasn't asked for it. I did go back to the original place of purchase so I guess I was on their records on the computer.

Can support Gossy's original post. Lodged complaint/query on lug torn off and cracking on ST's by email with Exclusive Tyre Dist. Got reply to go and see dealer.
By the time I got to dealer they had already been contacted by ETD. Quick look and a phone call to support what I was saying as fact and immediately offered replacements on the prorata guarantee and no cost replacement if it turned out to be a manufacturing defect.
I can take that up at any time now that the complaint has been logged. So given that it was probably wheel spin and then a sharpie that did the damage I am going to run them a bit longer and see. But if it turns out to be a problem I only pay for the 10000 km that I've done on them and get new ones for a sixth of the price.
Very happy so far. Left a few other club members on the side of the track with their muddies on, on a wet night trip in the clay laden tracks of the Strathbogies recently hee hee.
