Hi All, I am taking long service elave in Jan - Mar 2005 and am planning to do as much 4WD around Adelaide (ie anywhere in SA) during this time. I am reading a great deal about fantastic places such as Googs track. I am wondering if any of these desert places accessible or safe to do at this time of year? I am travelling from Qld to SA and back and am also wondering if there are any must-see places, in the opinions of forum members, in NSW and Northern Vic at this time of year?

Any ideas/feedback would bed greatly appreciated!

Chappo

We have travelled a number of times between SA & Qld at the time of the year you are planning to go.
Beware it gets very hot and extreme conditions apply. My advise is to ensure your vehicle' air conditioning and coolling are in tip top condition.
Take plenty of water and spare tyres.
The roads get pretty rough and because of the heat the tyres take a real hammering.
Be prepared not to see anyone - even the station people tend to go south this time of the year.
We love this time of the year out there as you have the country to your selves. Places like Birdsville are nearly deserted and when you arrive in town they treat you like royalty!
The caravan Parks are empty and you have to use the honest box to pay!
Places to visit - Arkaroola, Innaminka, Dig Tree, Corillo Dows Wool Shed etc, etc!
Just touring the country out there is worth the effort.

Chappo - think long and hard about the high heat levels, the remoteness of some localities and your ability to deal with a breakdown - all detail aside, experienced travellers who like those remote regions do not go there mid summer - for good reason - the heat can be fierce !

Heat is the problem. OK as long as your aircon works well and you can stay in it. I've treated travellers in summer who got quite sick just changing a flat tyre in 45 degree heat - they were only out of the car for 20 mins. Last summer we had 42 days in a row over 40 degrees.

Cheers

Cheers John - the more locals who can put in first hand experience the better - one visitor here at EOz about 2 weeks ago was also contemplating a good "tour" through the outback later in January ! As you say, simply changing a tyre can be stressful for we city types in that heat - how would they go stranded in between distant towns with no radio ? Anyway, is Des still working down past the roadhouse, in his dirt floor shed ?

Yes Banjo, Des Coffey is still here, still no concrete floor in his shed.
