Hi Kazzie

This topic has been the subject of heated debate ever since Captain Cook landed, or thereabouts.

See post 17706 for some ideas of fridge/freezer combinations. If you type the number in the Fast Find field at the top of the forum screen, you'll find it. Any search using "fridge" as the keyword will give you lots of info (well opinion, anyway, some of it useful!)

Good hunting

kazzie,
if you are in the market for a Waeco/Engel type of fridge then look at this site

http://www.refrigerationresearch.com.au/DR%20portables.htm

a 60Ltr Waeco style fridge for $982 new price and with warranty

They use Danfoss BD series compressors (as big Waeco) and can be used with 12v/24v/240v

In a 50ºC Hot Box test the reefer DR60 ltr was able to maintain -10ºC

The insullation is thicker than both the other brands.

for only 2 weeks a half decent dual battery system should suffice without the added cost of solar if the battery system is reasonable.
if you ask someone with a solar system they will tell you they are the best investment available - for long term camping.

have you concidered hiring a fridge for a 2 week holiday.?

Thanks for the site Mainey, had a long look through it, we like the look of the CF110 Fridge/Freezer, will be hiring one over christmas break to trial. we are setting up for travelling over the next few years and do go camping for weekends and weeks quite often. We don't want to "double buy" now and have buy later for the long trips - 3-6 mths at a time. Also would you have any advice on the benefits of buying the extra Waeco battery power units to go with the dual battery system.
cheers...karel

karel,
A decent dual battery system does not require add on anything, unless it is not working as it should, and in that case it should be fixed not accessorised, UNLESS it is with a solar system which I would fully recommend if you are camping for a week at a time in the same place.

A decent battery system will never (never ever) run short of power->
if... you put in more than you remove.

Is this the fridge you are looking at?
Pasted from the Waeco website, with the irrelevant information removed, to save electrons and forum space.

I state up front I am not a Waeco aficionado ):

I have never owned a Waeco, I can only obtain information from what I read on the Waeco website!

the fridge does not state it runs on 240v, it may, and at extra cost?
It also states the fridges are NOT Brand NEW

Ummm, for my $1,399 I would want 240v as an option and new, not someone’s else's problem fridge

the other fridge was $1,145 with 240v and the exactly same Danfoss compressor, and also with thicker insulation which gives better cooling retention and tends to use less power as well, saving the battery system further.
just my 2 cents worth, is your money...

Hi Kazzie,

We have a Waeco 50lts fridge which is fantastic. We lived out of it -2 adults, 1 dog and anyone else who was around! The trick is to be very organised. Great fridge.

Happy travels

Kazzie,

When it comes to fridges, size is important.

If you just want to get by with the basics fo two weeks a 40 or 50 L will do.

If you want to carry some luxuries, you'll need 80 or more, especially for two weeks. However they do chew a lot of power. can vary from 40 to 80 amps per day depending on how hot it is, how often you open it, whether you leave it in the sun, how cold you run it, whether you've got extra insulation around it etc.

I've just gone from an Engel 39L to a Waeco CF 80 (little brother of the CF 110). It's a great unit whch has the advantage of feing able to run a s a fridge/freezer, or all fridge, or all freezer.

To run a fridge this size solely from a second battery you need to put charge back into the battery daily. Also depends what type of second battery you have. Standard wet cell deep cycles only recharge at about 5 amps/hour. I spent the extra on an AGM battery as they accept a quick charge so a bit of running (10-15 minutes) 3 or 4 times a day will keep them topped up. Having said that, I'm seriously considering solar for the convenience. For two weeks, especially if you plan to stop at places for 2 or more days, I'd definitely go solar.

Cheers,

Jim.

Also,

If you're considering a Waeco, try The Fridgeshop, www.fridgeshop.com, they're currnetly doing the CF 110 for $1199. I got my CF 80 for $980 about four weeks ago. Both of these also come with a bonus 15 L thermoelectric cooler thrown in. Note they are seconds, or damaged stock (mine has a small ding in tne back and a small crack in the base) and only come with a 1 year warranty as opposed to 3 on a newie.

Just been through the same thing, there are lots around. You basicly get what you pay for. Plastic or somthing that should last a long time. I chose a trailblaza 80lt RC special $2000 but should last.www.norcoast.com.au
