G'day all, I have an aircon compressor fully kitted out to use as an air compressor (engine driven). However there is absolutely no way I can fit it into the engine bay of my landrover. I want to get a 12v electric motor to run it instead. What sort of motor should I get? A small starter motor from a wreckers?
Anyone got any ideas?
Much appreciated, Alex.

Run it from the PTO on the Rover.

Alex.
The starter motor has been tried, it is not very good, starters draw about 200 amps and get hot after about 30 seconds. You can fit the unit under the bonnet on a bracket off your air con. its a close fit but it can be done. Eric.

If you only want it for tires etc, just get a Blue Tounge, or Big Red.. Plumb them into an air tank from a truck wrecker..

Alex,

I've been looking at this myself and despite the advice to the contrary it can be done. The starter motor is heavy and not designed for the type of load you are applying. I'm looking into a brushless DC motor to keep the weight down. The one I have seen commercially available uses a series wound winch motor. It is heavy but does a brilliant job. I am currently in the US and am heading back to Oz in January, where I will look into it more closely. If you want to start the seach you need a motor of around 4-5hp and around 2000 rpm. Look up the motor manufacturers and they should have something available. then it is a matter of a direct connection and you are off like a frog in a sock. Let me know haw your search goes.

cheers

Craig
