Jenny and I went to Kurth Kiln (Gembrook) camping ground Saturday and Sunday and had a wonderful time.

At the campsite was a stramge chap with an old red Datsun Sunny Station Wagon and a box trailer set up with a bed, tarp, solar panel, bike and not much else.

When I bumped into him I asked him what he was doing, and he repiled "Just keeping out of trouble". He the went on to tell me of all the free campsites around Victoria. He seems to just go from camp to camp, sitting under his tarp doing bugger all. Doesn't go bushwalking, or riding, or much of anyhting that I could see.

Anyone come across him before and know anything of him?

Harmless enough (I presume), but I wasn't prepared to go off for a drive and leave Jenny at the campsite with only him there; maybe I'm a bit over protective but I don't like to take chances.

Cheers,

Jim.

Nothing wrong with being protective of your wife. What's more important, going for a drive or your wife's well being.

Although she could have always come with you :-)

Did you leave the toothbrushes at the campsite when you went driving?????

I hope not. If you did I am sure that he will send you the photos.

Heard of the "Toothbrush Bandit"

I think you did the right thing,
Besides...the way i see it, its better to miss out on a drive than to come back to some terrible news.
Just my shillings worth.

Probably just an old pensioner saving a few bikkies by not paying rent. Probably a bit disenchanted with the world system or ignored by family & might be there in time of your need. Hope I am right cos I feel a bit the same at times & see a few of them on the road.

Doesnt take much to do that...a couple one day then a widow(er), then half the pension disappears along with their way of life.

This bloke was only in his late forties. Seemed to be living from campsite to campsite in his old car and trailer.

Pleasant enough, but a bit odd, type of bloke. Anyway, he didn't give us any grief.
I guess it's a case of his life, his choice.

Just wondered if anyone knew of him, felt a bit sorry for him but he seemed happy enough.

Wasn't judging him, just wanted to know if he was a problem for others.

Obviously not. Good luck to him. If he's enjoying life, I wish him well, as I did when we left.

Cheers,

Jim.

Might be related to the guy we met in the Thredbo Youth Hostel. He walked around carrying a little torch which he constantly flicked on and off and would occasionally mutter about dynamite and nigeria!!!
If you ever want people to give you a wide berth I'd suggest behaving like that is the way to go. He emptyed the common room in less than 5 minutes.

This sounds very much like a guy I bumped into on the Mid North Coast of NSW. He was camped in a state forest camping area and seemed pretty harmless to me, although I must say, we were a group of 7 families with campers, so maybe he just decided to keep to himself cause of the numbers.
