Morning All,
Just a quick query. Has anyone had any experience with an external air conditioning unit?
I am looking to purchase an old Series Landy, and have been told that it must have air conditioning (by SWMBO...who else?)
I remember hearing about these units that sit on the top of the roof, but I have never seen one, or know if they are any good, or who to contact with regards to buying one. Alternatively, am I better looking for something to be mounted under the bonnet.
Ay suggestions?
Chump..

The roof type air conditioners were popular on older trucks and are still used on tractors and earthmoving gear. They aren't that robust (I was advised against installing one by a friend in the industry) and I would think the first low branch you came across would wipe it out.-Steve L.

I would have to put some sort of protection around it, or mount it in the front of a full length roof-rack or something.
Do you know why your friend recommended against it? Was it just that, or are there other problems?

He just said they are exposed to the elements alot more than a normal air con. and therefore tend to be less reliable than underdash units.

My experience with roof mounted air con units is from graders. They weren`t too bad but if the grader was going down or up a
hill or working a sideslope with the air con turned up anything above low you`d just about drown from the
water that used to come out of them.

I have seen one on the roof of a cruiser ute, as stated you would need good protection for it, they must work ok coz plenty of farmers spend all late spring sitting under one in the header/tractor

its gunna look ugly....on a toyota, but yours is a landy...right!?
one has to get refrigerant pipework up to unit and including electricals so i'd be looking at underbonnet jobs if your after something for price and a neater appearance of car

Chump.
The roof mounted units come in many forms, the ones made for emergency vehicles are very strong and not to tall. have a look at the Sprinter
ambulance roof units, they are that slight lump at the back of the roof. If that meets with the bosses spec. I can supply one. It will cool a landy even without the insulation they so desperately require. Eric.
