With the weather heating up, my terrano ('92) has started to run a bit warmer then usual. (Glad to see mine wasn't the only one.)

So, I thought I'll give the cooling system a good flush. I very quickly ran into the first problem. How does everybody manage to drain the cylinder block?

The drain plug on mine is right up there behind there turbo. I realise that there's suppose to be a little extension tube to go past the turbo but mine just has the plug/bolt on the block iteslf. There's just no way to get in there without taking out the turbo.

Is everybody else's like this? I'm really not looking forward to taking out the turbo every time I drain the coolant.

Anyway, the sun was going down fast, I was running out of time, so I did just a half a$$ed job for now, without draining the block. Which was just as well because now the water pump has decided to pack it in. (which explains the overheating problem.) At first it started sqeeling, and now it's just spraying coolant everywhere.

I've given repco a call and they say that I'll have to get an original pump from nissan. Is that true? Has anyone been able to get a non-genuine one?

Also, is there any tips, tricks and anything to lookout for while changing the pump?

Thanks in advance,

R.

My 12/97 T2 2.7 TDI did a water pump, genuine was about $700.00, but there are after market pumps, or you can get your own kitted. The viscous coupling fan hub on mine is part of the assembly & not removable.

Another Nissan trick! If Repco cant supply one maybe youre stuck with genuine but Bursons & Supercheap have pumps for many at under $100-, dont know about the
fan tho!

Na there is an aftermarket one its the same as the carbie GQ patrol. thompsens in QLD have them. The real pain is if you got the water pump off spend a day at it and take the timing chest out as well. There are 2 little o'rings behind the timeing chest and they seem to enjoy leaking as soon as you got the new pump in. Save the hassle and do it now!!! Mine is leaving puddles every where and I cannot be bothered to pull it down again to the new pump dies.

I got a pump to fit the T2 2.7tdi from Repco. The pump is listed as fitting a 2.7 td Navara. I took mine along and they had 2 different pumps in stock, the only difference being the clutch being smaller on mine. It was also the cheaper of the two at around $140.

Before you fit it, duck into Toyota and get some of the silicon oil stuff that they put in the clutch and squirt about 1/2 a tube into the new clutch, a full tube is too much and mine hardly stops running. It will help it run a little cooler, and saves having to pull the bloody thing off later.

As a matter of interest I just opened the diamond shaped indents around the 'Nissan" badge in the centre of the grille with a die grinder.
I reckon it will let about 25% more air flow through the radiator.
It certainly seems to run at a more constant temperature since.
I have also fitted a 'high flow' thermostat.

And take the fan off before removing the pump. The pump with the fan fitted is about 5mm longer than the space between the block and the radiator.

Better still, take out the radiator and soak it in the kids pool to loosen up all that mud while you gin around with the pump.
Dont trust the gasket to fill all the gaps either. coat both sides of the gasket with a thin layer of gasket silicone. I found mine didn't seal after filling the bloody radiator.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I called Thompsons at Capalaba. It's $180 and they have one in stock. Nissan original is $391.

I will also pick up that Toyota clutch oil and give the whole cooling system a good flushing. ( after I figure out what to do with that cylinder blosk drain plug.)

Cheers

I got mine out by laying under the car with your arm up betweed the gearbox and the front prop shaft. Not easy, and I have long arms, and when the plug comes out you have to move quick of get wet.
