hmmmmmmmm.............isn't this the sort of question you should be asking before you purchase the vehicle?
How much does the loaded float weigh? A mate of
mine tows a 1.5t trailer behind his Hilux same spec as yours but 2002 model and reckons you barely feel it.

Mine pulled a 15' caravan with no drama. Keep the load off 5th gear and use 4th when under load. I'd check your weights to ensure you do not exceed allowable limits inc. towball weight. The 3.0 TD engine is a good little unit and should do the job. Cheers

My mate had a 1999 HiLux 3lt which he had turboed. It went
well. Towing wasn't a strain and but it had an overheating problem for a long time. He traded up to a Nissan GU 4.2 diesel a few weeks ago and is as happy as a pig in mud :o)

Willem, they are different motors. The non turbo is a 5L and the turbo is a 1kzte. Ozy versions of the 1kzte should have no overheating probs as they took the second battery out to make room for a bigger radiator.

Hi Jeff...I take it that the 5L is a typo. Not even the Landcruiser has such a big engine. :o)

5L is the model number, just like the 2.8L D 's model number is the 3L etc etc.

:-)
Yeah it's Crazy, the 2.4L was a 2L, the turbo was a 2L-TE, that all made sense, then from there it went non-sensical!

A decent sized float will be minimum 850kg (our extended front float is almost a tonne) then two nags close to a tonne, plus some gear you are going to be
well over the two tonne mark. Whats the legal limit for a hilux?

u will need to be careful as the max tow weight is 1800 kg so i would check it b4 the men in blue do. would probably tow it ok but i wouldnt want to be in it if ur going down
hill in the wet and hit the skids.

You've got an excellent motor there, you won't have a problem. But yeah if it's a manual only use 5th on flat or cruises or not at all. Otherwise you could premetually wear the gear box.

Here's a thought, why not get the two horses to tow the Hilux. Think of the savings with diesel over $1 a litre.

kozie,
I have towed a 1500kg+ cherry picker with a 2002 TD Hilux. It travels ok. With no weight in the ute it feels like it is steering from the rear a little. It is possible that the characteristics of the trailer caused the problem more-so than the ability if the car.
It goes up hills better than my 2H troopy!!!!
