DD,
we drove along there in April this year. We drove from
Kintore along
the Desert Rd to
Kunawarritji, then along the Wapet Rd to 80 mile beach. It was just after the very heavy rains in March and the Grt Sandy Desert didn't look like a desert (grass,
water birds etc). The road was slow going in
places due to washaways and many diversions into the scrub. I don't know who runs the
Well 33 roadhouse now as it changed hands after we visited, but they would be the ones to ask, or the bloke from VKS737 who maintains the road reports.

Bob, had a peek at your website. Lucky fella, being able to swan around seemingly at will :))
How
well used is the Wapet road during the touristy season ? In your opinion could another prolonged cyclone season cause the track to become a problem when dry ?
Sorry to ask in public, couldnt find an email address to go offline.
Cheers
Jim
PS Also thanks to the other posters.

FL,
the rain this year was very unusual (10 inches in a week). I don't think many people use this road - less than one vehicle a week. A dry track would be no problem at any time. It was an easy drive. It took us 8 days to get to
Broome from
Canberra using dirt roads from
Marla on. No punctures and no mech probs.

Hi DD,
we have been travelling on the Wapet track during August 2004 from
Well 33 to 80 mile beach. Travelling is still nice and easy despite of corrugations, washouts and a few sandy stretches.
All windmills are broken, but in a few
places (towards the GNHWY) blue plastic tanks with emergency
water have been put along the track. Compared to
previous trips the track has deteriorated. It has become narrow across the
bigger and capped sandhills due to deep washouts. These spots will become the problem spots after more heavy and prolonged rain falls.
good luck
Andy
