In Adelaide. Does anyone know of a aftermarket product to extend my fuel range. The LongRanger fuel tanks are good but for $800-$900 I am only gaining 40 litres from my original 95 litre tank. That's a lot of km's before I get my cost back. I would love to get around the 180 litres.
Anyone know of anyone who makes fuel tanks (not mass produced) to individual needs?

Thanks,

There are 45 and 60ltr 'belly' tanks in GQ petrols. You can use them in Diesel as well, but you need a pump and stuff... They do work, and mount up under the chassis round about where the drivers seat is.

Try wreckers for them, or outerlimits4x4 forum. I had one sold it for $200 12 mths ago.

Agree with the 40ltrs for $900 is a scam, specially when you can get 2 jerry cans for $30!

How is it that a long range tank will pay for itself? You use the same amount of fuel regardless of your tank capacity. In fact if you are carrying another 80kg in fuel then your economy will get worse if anything at all.

I know of two methods. Long range tank and jerry cans. If you have a tank custom made then it will cost more than a mass produced one I'm sure. Try talking to 4wd systems in Adelaide and they might be able to point you in the right direction if they don't do it themselves.

By paying for itself I meant filling up at cheaper prices before going out bush and I guess the convience of it. Just done the simpson and it was a bit of a pain carrying fuel on the roof rack. As well all know, Diesel is messy when there is red sand all around you and it sticks to everything. Would be nice to have a bigger tank but can't warrant the cost. Thanks for the advice on 4wd systems. Waiting on a call back as they have a 160L tank which is a good size or a 80L aux. Interesting to see what prices they are.

lol.. I had to call em back. Got tired of waiting. Prices aren't that bad. $669 for a 160L and $1003 for aux. The Aux is more because of pumps, gauges etc. Would go for the main tank (160L) I guess but might wait till the next big trip. This is the biggest one I have found for the GQ though.
Thanks all for your help.

If you have a body lift, you can get one from brown davis.

but with that 160ltr, how much is hanging down in the wind? Im betting it would be like an SLR5000 Torana.. about 1inch clearance off the ground. Theres no room elsewhere for it...

Gossy,
be aware that most of the big main tank replacements like the 160lt job cannot be fitted if you have a rheece hitch style tow bar, so you will need to check the mounting restrictions.. And as Truckster said, they do hang down a bit more than a standard tank, something else to check..

When i was doing all my searching for a long range tank, I found the Brown Davis AUX tank for my GQ was the largest without comprimising clearence - I think it is an 80lt tank from memory - but you can look it up on the web easily enough..

I had the 4WD systems tank in my GQ and now have one in the GU. The GQ didnt have the reece hitch, but the GU does. The only difference between the two tanks is the shape at the rear top of the tank. The GU is more rounded. The reece hitch has to be removed to get the tank in, but it fits back easily. I fitted it myself, so it can't be too hard.

These tanks do hang down lower than standard, but not like SLR5000 torana. I've taken my GU across some pretty rugged country (no track stuff here in the Pilbara) and when I was checking it out on the weekend, it only has a few scratches. No dents, no cracks!

Getting the tank in takes a couple of people or a good hydraulic jack and some care. The hoses take a bit to make sure they're not caught up, kinked etc.

I dont know how much I've saved by buying fuel in bigger places where the diesel is upto 10 or more cents per litre cheaper, but I dont really care because if I'm on holidays and I want to go somewhere then I just do it! You only live once, so make the most of it.

If you are in Adelaide, at least you'll save on freight. You will need to go there or phone up, 4WD Systems are notoriously slow at replying to email or fax messages.

Who is brown davis. Looked in the white pages under "business" and nothing there. He assured me that it doesn't affect ground clearance! Veh does have a body life though.
