Toyota 4.5lt petrol engine. The engine idle speed every now and then wants to drop down from the 550rpms to 250rpms for no apparent reason. I can reset it, but I am wondering if it has some problem or pending component failure ie the computer.
Has anyone experienced this and advise of the solution??
Thanks
Rod

sounds like a prob with the air bypass valve, give the throttle body a clean along with the bypass valve, and clean the connector on the valve. costs nothing and is a good place to start.

i had similar scenario in 94 4.5 man 80 series
every few months this problem occurred
start car and car would want to stall ie come up to set of lights and as you slow down engine wanted to stall-had to keep engine revving til lights changed. this may go on for 5-10mins or bit longer sometimes and would be fine for next few months and same would happen again. not always when cold either from memory
nfi what problem was to this day

I had a similar problem to this when my speedo sender unit packed it in. Normal driving was OK but it did have a tendency to drop revs and even stall when braking.
I imagine that the computer was not getting all the information it needed which confused it.

Hey rod woldn't co-inside with the air con cutting in would it? When I had my feroza it would do that as the idle up (vacume operated) was leaking pressure and would cause the car to stall when braking if the air con cut in.

Giday Jeff, haven't used the aircon for awhile (might this arvo going home thought). It idles up proportionally when the aircon is on. It doesn’t want to stall when braking.
So how's the Bub and the sleepless nights?

I must be the luckiest bugger on earth, sleepless nights????? What are they?
She's even had a couple of 8 hour sleeps overnight and she's only just over 1 month old! She's a/my little angel! We are taking her away after Christmas for a week down south, not
camping though! :-( But if she travels
well it won't be long before we can come along on another Bushcamp!

Don't know about Tojo's but I had a similar prob with a V8 Disco. Apparently it was most likely the Air Flow Meter playing up. A proper mongrel of a job to accurately diagnose as the prob needs to occur when connected to the external computer.
As I said, may not be the case, but sounds familiar. If it is, see if you can source a reconditioned unit .... a new original will send you broke. ... Assuming Tojo parts are similarly priced, which would most likely be the case.
As an aside. I recently bumped the rear door on the Fender. Reversed into a tree that grew in the few seconds since I looked in the mirror. Rear door steel spare wheel bracket $78 ............. rear door "XTreme" plastic decal $110 ..... you work it out. ... buggered if I can.
Cheers
