My 10ft 'V' nose tinny absolutely flies with one on board. The 6hp Tohatsu can't be used flat out as the speed it reaches can feel dangerous.
With two aboard it struggles. No matter how far forward the weight is placed, the rear stays down and the nose up. The top speed is maybe 30% of what it is when one is aboard.
Has anyone used a "hydrofoil" attachment on a small outboard. From your experience, do you think it might give the transom the lift it needs so that a reasonable speed is reached.
Thanks for your help,
Dave

Hi Dave,
I have not used o hydrofoil but I and several friends have had various 12ft tinnys with 15hp's on them. When really loaded with
camping gear some have had problems planing but not the raised front to the extent you describe, have you adjusted the trim on the motor? Come to think of it, with a 6hp I expect you will always have difficulty planing with two people.

Hi Dave i have had a foil on my 15ft glass runnabout for 15 years and they are the best things since sliced bread , it will help . Make sure the cav plate is no more than about 25-50 mm bellow the keel .

waste of money on such a small motor. 15hp and up seem to benefit the most. I have one on my 50 and seems to get out of the
water pretty quick. Go out and buy a 15hp and you wont even need a foil ;-0

In this situation a hydrofoil would be a waste of money. A 6hp with any weight on board will never do better than displacement speed.
If you have unlicenced drivers who might use the boat, keep the 6hp and put up with the slow speed when loaded.
If you regularly carry more, a slightly bigger boat with a 15hp two stroke would be the go. It would also be safer and more flexible.
Fishnet Australia has a good boating
forum you might find useful.

Dave,
this would be the first time i have ever heard of a 6hp being dangerous because it was to quick.
the easy fix is to lift the motor position on the transom but with a 6hp why would you bother?

Dave , foils are not the answer mate , they require a large chunk of any power you have to work and then they only seem to perform on some hulls. I put a foil on my 40 4 stroke yammy , yes it was marginally quicker onto the plain but was 9 km/h slower ( measured with gps ) and it used more fuel . Just but a bigger motor !
