Sobering reminder to carry out thorough pre-trip checks.
Coming up the freeway into Briz Vegas this morning and passed a Subaru Forrester on a tilt tray, which had a trailer in tow with the Subaru's camper trailer on board. Camper trailer had broken a leaf spring, axle has gone backwards and just about destroyed the rear end of the trailer. From my brief look at freeway speeds, the spring broke near the front eye.
Trailer was what I would call a 'light offroader'. Looked like a fairly new unit too.
So to all you explorers out there, give all your gear a thorough going over before you travel this festive season and hope you have a better trip than that Subaru owner.

Cheers, John

Seen this problem with metal powder ext before.

The powder inside settles, and can become very compact.

Fire the ext and you only get the gas.

When I sed to race at the track, the track steward used to get all the drives shaking the ext before racing.

Part of my pre trip prep is to give the ext a good 5 to 10 min shake.

I wouldnt mind betting that the camper had the usual cheap slipper type springs which of course dont have a rear shackle to stop the spring going backwards with the axle when the front breaks.
A shackle type spring would not have been much of a problem in same situation methinks & they provide a much better ride than the slippers which toss their load in the air on every bump.

Probably right, ianmc. Couldn't tell as the back end of the trailer was too much of a mess. Must have been travelling at speed when it let go.
