Reversing Light Problem

Folks,

Got a 95 Triton that likes to have the reversing lights on all the time, only had the truck 6 weeks - but didnt think the problem was there when I got it - cant see my bum when im drivin! Eventually the fuse blows..so maybe it was blown when I got it?

I thought it would just be the reversing light switch on the box - so got another one ($44.00 Jeez!) - same problem.

I had a very minor tail ender, and have only had the car back a few weeks - but no wiring damage - (just bent the panel behind the towball) They did put a new trailer wiring plug in - but pulled that apart and all looks ok. Took all the wires out of it any way, made sure none were touching - reversing lights still on when ignition is on. Allother wiring looks fine.

Followed the wiring underneath - no damage.

But when I take the reversing light switch out of the gear box - and push it in - lights go out. So my first question is - is the little switch pushed in most of the time, and when you throw it in reverse, it releases the switch? (I thought it would be the other way around?

So I reckon either the widgy thingo in the box that pushes on the switch is broken - how likly is that? or the wire is getting current from somewhere else?

Any ideas? Dont reverse much in the dark anyway.......

If it is wired up for a trailer it could be caused by a dodgy connection.Steve-L

Zebu.
From memory there is a ball bearing between the switch and the selector shaft. This may be missing. the other possibility is that the switch has got a thicker than standard washer under it. This is a case where a $30 multimeter whould have paid for itself in in one job. Eric.

Eric,

Fantastic! When I took the first switch out - I didn't remember a ball bearing - but I did find one on the floor later! I thought it was starnge - but shrugged it off - luckily I didnt throw it out!!.

So do I just push the ball bearing up inside the casing before putting the switch in - I take it it wont just disappear into the box!!.

Your help is much appreciated.

Eric,

I went ahead and stuck the ball bearing in - bingo - working fine - so I think the original switch must have been faulty.

Thanks for the advice - saved me lots of hours of wasted time - and no doubt $$$

....I'm sure you're just being modest ! I am sorry for being so rude, it's just that one of our cats is called Zebu (short for Zebulon) and for a moment I wondered whether she'd gone out and purchased a car without our knowing and perhaps was using the computer after we'd hit the sack !!!......It must be the heat......

Have a very merry Christmas & New Year, Zeb.

By the way, I know what reindeers do at Christmas....but what do antelopes get up to ?
