Friend just bought a Jeep and it came with a Navman. Seems to be ok with Aussie wide coverage, not sure of the map detail off the beaten track so to speak...but Im just wondering if they are worth the money. I own a laptop and was considering using it in conjunction with a GPS for navigation but the technicalities got to much for me....

If your mate just bought a Jeep he will need more than a Navman to save the day.

Rick the technicalities of using a laptop and GPS are pretty not really that bad, I thought it was going to be overly complicated but once you get stuck into it, it's not to hard at all, if you have Ozi Explorer it does pretty much everything for you!!
I've also heard that the Navman is pretty much usless detail wise once you leave the city, but I don't know first hand what it's like.

Most of them are standard. All factory fitted nav systems are for major areas only. Toyota for instance only fit 1 dvd of a possible 3 that it takes to cover Australias populated areas. In my instance it only covers the east of Oz.

Price to upgrade your database..

$500 !!!! per DVD !!

I run a Navman GPS sleeve on my Ipaq PDA with the Smart ST software and Sensis street maps.
I also run Oziexplorer ce with Hema, Topo 1:25,000 NSW and Auslig 1:250,000 maps.
This configuration works well.
Assume the Jeep has an inbuilt Navman and I'm not sure how configurable these are.

Hi Rick,

You're talking abou 2 different animals. The Navman (like my VDO unit) is turn-by-turn navigation and uses the basic UBD information. So, as others have suggested, not awesome outside the city and practically useless except as a compass off the highways.

Now, the raster graphic programs such as OziExplorer just plot where you are on top of a picture and you can work the rest out by yourself. In a sense, OziExplorer doesn't really know where you are, just plots a bread crumb (or follows someone esle's). The other style like Navman, know where you are and tell you where to go so to speak :-).

Clear as mud?

Smocky.
