HELP !!
I am a real loser when it comes to computers .
I took 180 way points on my recent trip in the Great Sandy Desert trip on a hand held Eagle GPS .
I am trying to import these onto my Magellan "Great Desert Tracks" software on this computer and then save it to a memory card to go into the actual GPS .
I was semi successful in this and managed to create some way points but they only had the degrees on them , not the minutes and seconds .
When I put these three into an excell column , I seperated them by commas . This is obviously not the correct way .
Can anybody help me with the correct way to do it .
Thanks ,
Willie .

I was looking at the plot files on this site and notice they are given as one number no commas nothing - perhaps?

Hi Davoe,
But how would it differentiate between 12423 being 12,4,23 and 1,42,23 etc.
Thanks
Willie

PS
maybe it has to be 1204023 ???

Willie,

It sounds like you need a suitable intermediary program that can talk to both GPS units. Excel is definately not the easiest way of doing the conversion.

Consider using something like GPSBabel, EasyGPS or OziExplorer.

Willie - further to Pluto's suggestion the procedure would be to download the waypoints again from the Eagle GPS using easyGPS program and save the file in *.loc format. Then using GPSBabel you can convert to Magallan Mapsend format (for use with DiscoverAus) or Magellan protocol format (for use via SD card). If you use oziExplorer it would be even easier - download waypoints from Eagle GPS unit - change the GPS configuration in OziExplorer and upload them to the FX.

Cheers

Greg ,
I answered your email before I read this . What kind of cable would I use to connect the Eagle to my computer and where would I get one .
I would be happy to Purchase OziExplorer if it would save me typing in the co-ordinates of 180 way points .
Thanks for your help and thanks to you too Pluto ,
Willie

woops again ....due to my one eyed, biased opinion on OziExplorer I neglected to confirm Pluto's suggestion that you can use EasyGPS to download the waypoints from the Eagle GPS (once you get an appropriate cable) and then change the configuration in the program to a suitable Magellan GPS (there is no FX listed but they should all use same protocol) and upload them to the FX...same as OziExplorer. I dont think GPSbabel has facility for upload/download - just file conversions. Easy GPS may be you best option because its pretty simple and its FREE.

Another good waypoint managment/conversion program (that utilises GPSBabel) is
GSAK, though it is specifically made for Geocaching use.

Willie – to import an Excel file into DiscoverAus you will need your cords in one of two formats..like this

# Name Latitude Longitude
1 WPT001 S33°25.793'E115°54.631'
2 WPT002 S33°24.410' E116°05.235'

or

# Name "Latitude (degrees)" “Longitude (degrees)"
1 WPT001 -33.42988017 115.91052288
2 WPT002 -33.40682787 116.08725718

Woops sent that last post before I was finished..

So you need 4 columns with headings as shown and coord's in right format - decimal degrees would be easiest as you dont have to add the ° required when using degrees and minutes. Best way to see format required is to export some waypoints from DiscoverAus and have a look at the file format. Delete columns not required (all except #, Name,, Lat and Long) and fill with you data in matching format. The hard bit is getting it in the right format..if its not already.
