Went to an auction the other weekend and picked up a Barrett SB250RC hf radio for $475, it is an ex mining radio and we took the punt that it would be ok. My wife took it to Barrett in Bibra Lake and they were very helpfull, the guy who looked at it said it was one of there old models but for what we are going to be doing with it was perfect, he checked it over and changed a few things but said it was in good order and had all the extras that particular model came with, now all we need is to buy an ariel and fit it in the Patrol all up it is going to cost us about $1300 including the original purchase i think we did allright. Now we have to learn how to use it.

Well done Martin on it all working out! You took a gamble for sure and good luck to you. As a matter of interest where is the additional $825 going given that the radio cost you $475? You say that all you need to buy is an aerial so beware of spending that much for an aerial on an old radio! Or have I missed something? I'm in the market for either an HF radio or a sat phone. I guess $1300 is good going and of course you have no further running costs so I guess you gradually catch up and pass the the sat phone cost wise.
I'd be interested in opinions.

Hi Andrew,
We spent an additional $150 at Barrett getting them to check it out and replace a few things they also supplied us with a power cable that was missing, the remaing dollars are for the aerial and fitting which i might attempt myself and save a few dollars.

I bought my whip and base from Bushcomm and was really happy with the service and advice. I suggest you look at their site and email them. They posted from Perth to Melb and the goods were received quickly and in good condition. Cheers
