I was looking into hf walkie talkies in the hope of getting a little extra range whilst bushwalking, fishing or 4wding. Presently I own a couple of cheap uhf handhelds which are fantastic for a cheap set. Any recomendations for hf. Cheers

Do you mean HF as in 27 MHz CB or do you mean HF as in Flying Doctors and VKS737?

Flying Doctor type HF's aren't available in a walkie talkie. QMac do make a portable (read lug-able) HF, but they aren't cheap.

If you mean 27 MHz CB then there are two that I know of: One is the Mundara SY-201 which is available from bleepsmith stores and details are at http://www.alphalink.com.au/~gfs/products/sy-201.htm
The other is the Dragon SS-201 that I last saw advertised at Harris Communications

You need to be aware that 27 MHz CB isn't a reliable form of communication. In AM mode they aren't any better than UHF. In SSB mode you may find that you can't talk to someone 3 km away but can talk to someone 2000 km away, and an hour later you can only get someone 10 km away. To get reliable communication on HF requires a wide range of frequencies from 2 MHz to 17 MHz to cope with all ionispheric conditions (ie Flying Doctor radios).
