Can anybody suggest a navigation system (moving map) that shows accurate four wheel drive track information, ie
Vic High country?

Oziexplorer software running on a notebook PC or PDA provides the media for moving map when connected to a suitable GPS.
Getting the maps with detailed 4WD tracks is the "problem". Oziexplorer is capable of accepting scanned detail from paper maps so if you can get your hands on paper maps that have the info you want/need it's possible to scan them and use them with oziexplorer.
There will be someone on this
forum, I'm sure, that can point you to suitable maps either in digital or hard copy.
try www.oziexplorer.com.au for a trial version and www.gpsoz.com.au for info on maps and GPSs.

Thanks for that Rossco. Tell me, how does one scan an A00 map sheet?
Secondly, I understand that oziexplorer can function on a PDA. Now, which types/brands/formats do I need to know will work? How does the GPS connect to the PDA? Any suggestions for hardware would be magic!

Desert,
If you go to the OziExplorer web site and click on the Information link, there is a method describing the scanning of large format maps on any scanner. I can also recomend the stiching software mentioned there.

Desert, I am currently running Oziexplorer, for Vic H.C., you really need 1:25,000 scale maps to be of any real value. Here I use CFA's Firemap series, as
well as CFA region info. Think the region info is 1:100,000, but still ok, Im not in the CFA, but had access to a mate's mate whos plumber's brother.....
Any way also got Melways and entire Vicroads, plus above maps on 3 CD's... all ozf2 format, all geo-referenced
You can buy the 1:25,000 maps at around $7 each (digital) - there are about 1,100 maps for the state?
Cheers, beers, and happy new years....
Jarrod.

Hi Jarrod. OK, I have DNRE 1:25000 for all of Vic on CD. How are you running oziexplorer? Laptop or PDA or whatever?

I have a Haicom 204E GPS - Its a mouse style GPS that plugs into the PDA. I used to have an IPAQ now an XDA II (Just need to get a new cable to plug into the XDA around $20)
I'm using OziExplorer with NatMaps and 1:25,000 scale maps from maptrax (I think these are DNRE).
1:25,000 is a bit small in practice - 1:50,000 is better. Avaliable on the maptrax web site here
I got the GPS etc from Johnny Appleseed. I notice ExplorOZ now has these mouse style GPS's too. I purchased my natmaps for here.
The biggest problem I had in the VHC was the maps being way out of date. Soooooo many
tracks closed.
Love to hear from those who are using a more up to date set.

Gary, what I find successful when using the 25k maps is to have a larger scale map loaded into the "regional map window" for the big picture.
moving map/show regional map window, right click to resize and can be minimized/maximized.

Good suggestion but the regional map feature on a small PDA isn't that helpful.
Might be OK on a lappy.

Thanks Gaz. Any particular reason for swapping from the IPAQ? Also, I presume that the mapping detail is a Raster image the same as a laptop?

Desert
No good reason. I get my PDA through work and just got an upgrade. If anything (for this application) the IPAQ is better because it has a slightly larger screen.

Thanks Gaz. Any chance we could hook-up, so I can see your set-up in the flesh? My knowledge of PDA's and related hardware is very limited.
I'd just like to see the mapping detail first hand?

I looked at Tumaus as
well. Looks very impressive but it only has Vic at the moment and doesn't work on PDA's.
But if you only want Vic (although I guess the NZ mob will continue to add states over time) and only want a lappy. It looks very good.
Their website is Here.
