May I suggest that melting down a battery at home to get the lead is a lousy idea?
I actually tried such a foolish thing many years ago, when backyard incinerators were still the norm, got lots of nasty smoke and fumes and a few dribbles of grotty lead for my troubles.
It ain't worth it, believe me.
The bit above, where plastic battery cases are supposed to melt in 100 deg
water is either a furphy or very worrying. Please tell me the brand that 'melts' at 100 deg so I can avoid it.
What more likely is happening is that the boiling
water melts the tar seal of the plastic battery case and it falls apart.
The case could be re - used as is or granulated to make new cases.
The lead
grid ( mostly oxide anyway) would have to be recycled cemically or by electrolysis, just heat is not going to do the trick, IMO.
I have no idea if they recycle the seperation grids as
well.
