600 C.C.A battery

Hi all I just got my self and new battery 600cca 75/AH Power Bread Marine battery.

A mate was saying to put it on charge for a 24hours so I dont damage the alternator of the 4WD, I plan to use this battery on the 4WD instead of a standard car battery.

Is there any truth to the battery damaging the alternator if i just hook it up..

I run a duel set up, one side as a smaller marine battery while the main battery is a N70 on its way out.

The only reason I can think that your friend would want to charge the battery for is that I'm told that some alternators are not able to charge a heavily discharged battery. In any case, I would think that an hour on a home battery charger would be ample, not 24 hours.

I've always simply put new batteries straight into my 4WD with no problems.

I got the marine one because it seems to have more grunt than other ones I've had in the past, right now the main battery doesn't seem to have enough power to start the 4wd so the boat battery which I use every time I go boating is in the 4wd as a duel set up..I had to use jumper leads today to jump from the boat battery to the main battery to start her..if I take out the boat battery the 4wd wont start at all..

I have a HJ 60 So I spose the alternator should be strong enough ?

I have found in a few early 60's, that the charge wire is no longer up to the par and is often resposable for voltage drops in the system, so if it is killing batteries quickly it is worth testing. to test start it and check voltage on battery post then on the back of the alternator. While i am on about 60's, just about all diesels I get I replace the main positive feed to the starter and the 2 main negatives(body and engine block), makes for easier cold starts as they spin twice as fast on the starter, factory wiring wasn't great then, and twenty years does it no favours. How many K's has yours done??

As far as I know all new batteries come fully charged, so I can't see any reason why you shouldn't just put it in place. Can't see any way it would damage the alternator ... usually the other way around, if the regulator is stuffed and the alternator cooks the battery by overcharging.

Hi tom,

A mate of mine who's an auto sparky, does the same as mentioned here before.
Dodgy original wiring is the first thing to let you down on a cold morning, particularly between the battery and starter, and between alternator and battery, including earths.

Also, I have read of an oil suppliment that is good for old diesels, helps em start better n stuff. I read about it a few months back in 4WD Monthly. Some old farmer wrote in to say this stuff had saved his HJ60 from the tip !!!

I know theres a lot of these oil fixem type things around, but this I think is a reasonably new to the market product.
