I was at work today , doing the usual Auction thing I do every Tuesday. Now with xmas coming things are a little quiet , so I wondered off to the 4x4 damged section.
I walk around 14 rolled 4bys , that were pretty serious . Some had gear others were standard , what I did notice, was that they all had road tyres. No A/T's no muddies , but hwy tyres. So I started to ask myself , were there people first timers , they bought there first 4by and thought they could go anywere. Most serious off roaders I know , all have off road tyres , or 2 sets of tyres. As I walked out , I notices a 4by with Muddies that had obviouslt hit a power pole. Now I say to myself , here is someone that probably drove his car like it had road tyres.
No real point to this post , but a interesting find.

Interesting observation Eric.
As a side point, how much do they get for these rolled wrecks?
I ask because I am looking in the future (distant - looking at the bank balance!) buying a wreck where the body is totalled but where the running gear is OK and putting a new body on it in a retro or vintage style. Laugh if you will but I would love something like an A-Model ford truck cab and tray body on a V8 100 series chassis/engine/drivetrain. Slightly hotted up it would make an awesome truck.
Cheers
Muddy

I dont Follow the damaged auctions , I only go in there if I want a wreck for parts . Your main issue will be the statutory write off , this means the vehicle is never to be registered again. I would speak to your local road authority and ask to speak to the engineering department. They will give you a run down on what engineers will have to see to have it registered again.

On the stat write off thing, if it is a real 4WD, ie with a separate ladder chassis, you can reuse either the body or the chassis again as according to Vic Roads they are both components. So you would use the VIN/serial number of the A model to re-resgister your creation. I did this just resently with a Hilux, bought a heavy rolled stat write off from fowles, with V8 running gear and used the numbers from the body shell I bought privately to re-resgister it again after the re-shell, no engineer required.

Stat right off is just that . They look at a car whole . Not 2 parts . If you inquier at vic roads and ask them about what you did , they would say no . I would say that if they found out what you did , they would cancel the reg.

I to tried asking Vic Roads, if you want to find something out about the rules the last people to talk to is Vic Roads, unless you want to waste an hour of your own time finding out how little they know. I did my own research on the subject when I was wrecking stat write off vehicles to find out if I could sell the chassis or bodys with the numbers attached. Like any wrecker I can privately sell stat write off components to any one not reusing those numbers. Ie. you bend the chassis on your 80 series(not likely but for a point), you can go to any wrecker and buy a chassis that was part of a stat write off as you will be using your existing VIN/Serial number, not the one that is recorded as a stat. So the hilux body that I used did not have a stat recorded against it i was able to use it, as far as Vic Roads are concerned the only thing that was replaced using stat write off components was the chassis as engine numbers are not recorded as stats. This only applies to component based vehicles, not to the average falcodore. To this day i have not found a Vic Roads employee(including their rules/engineering department) that could find thier a**e with two hands. As you are in the car game you should be aware how imcompetent they can be. Sorry to be long winded, can you tell I can't stand Vic Roads. PS a good mate of
mine does contract computer work for insurance companies and Vic Roads, and he tells me that even stat write offs appear back n the books reresgistered from time to time, especially cars that were stat from
water imersion from the floods about 12 months ago. It is normally the insurace companies that pick it up not the forever useless Vic Roads.

just thinking out loud here but wouldn't you change over your A/T's for the spare set prior to the auction. I know I would if it were possible to try and salvage a few bucks or have them for the new rig.
Then again not all would and you saw a large number of vehicles with H/T's so I guess not.
No wonder us 4WD drivers are considered dangerous with so many damaged vehicles present

Would you trust tires that have been in a roll over? Depending how bad.. but they could get some serious internal damage if it was over and over a few times.
also anything on the insurance company policy, is theirs.. so you cant salvage chit really.. or they can lower the payout $ for whats missing..

Yeah Truckster it either belongs to the insurance company or the
fork lift drivers at certain auction houses, guess it depends how quick the forkies are on the day eh.

Looking at it from another perspective Eric, I wonder how many of them had oversized, illegal tyres and changed them back to road tyres prior to making an insurance claim?

if they rolled on the dirt i reckon you may be on the money , or they could just be 'substitute sportscars' that didn't quite make it.
