Got my 80 series back from getting a new radiator and took it for a spin. Temp gauge headed steadaly north and when I pulled up and stopped the motor the fan free spun for at least 5 seconds and had little resistance when I checked it. oh yea I thought it is stuffed. It wasnt long however brfore the resistance came back. That night (still hot) I took it for another blat 130kph no worries, pulled up fan stopped straight away and had plenty of resistance WTF . My gut feeling is replace it and be done, Is this an easy job (it looks it) as I probably wont be able to get a mechanic betwwen now and my christmas break

Your friendly Tojo dealer will sell you some more silicone to top the thermo unit up with, common problem and a new thermo unit may be exactly the same.
Do a search as this has been mentioned before along with part numbers for the silicone fluid.
Also ensure that the little bimetallic coil in the front centre of the thermo is clean and free of debris, if it is covered up withy dirt and crud it will never sense the air temp through the radiator.

If you just go to a toyota place and ask for the silicon oil they'll know exactly what you want. I picked up one just last week for my nissan and the little tube will set you back $11.

As a matter of interest, do they have a filler plug, or do you have to dismantle them?
Are Nissan the same?

Mine has a small filler plug that a 10mm spanner will undo. Make sure the filler is at the top to fill and the bottom to drain...Had some fun with mine wouldnt cut out....but that was because the engine thermostat stayed closed....
