Can anyone recommend what options (besides genuine) I have in getting the following items for a 100 Series Cruiser TD
- BONNET PROTECTOR AND HEADLIGHT COVERS.
- REAR DUSTGUARD.
Cheers
(Yes.... this is for X-mas Present)

For the covers any auto accessory place will do. Probably the same for the dust guard.

Why not just get genuine and sabve the running around. I am not sure you can get much of these aftermarket and the price is going to be around the same.

I priced Autobarn and others against Holden for my Rodeo protectors. Which I never bought mind you. Holden was heaps more expensive and the only difference I could see was the Genuine ones had Rodeo written on them.
I'd price both and see for yourself.

Hey Utemad,
I don't know where you do your shopping but obviously not inthe right shops. I work in a dealership and we supply and fit Rodeo headlamp guards for $85. We sell them in parts at full retail for $65 plus gst = $71.50 and Supercheap just quoted me $66.50 and don't have any stock. Wouldn't call that huge difference!!

Mine is a 1997 Rodeo (last shape). Does that make a difference?
I don't remember the prices (was a while ago I checked) but remember that the aftermarket ones were around the high $60 and that the genuine price was over $100.
You can get new headlights for $30 for a cheapy and $70 for a fancy one.

I just checked with my parts man and 1997 covers are actually cheaper!!
I know this is an old perennial arguement, and I may be biased cos I work in the industry but I always insist on genuine parts. I have an 80 cruiser and the same applies. I have SEEN brake pads made in Taiwan and sold in Oz that were made of compressed cardboard, i have SEEN oil filters filled up with cotton wool, I have SEEN tow bars fail and kill horses. You will never convince me otherwise regardless of cost.
Best Wishes

I'm not saying that aftermarket is always better because it is sometimes cheaper or whatever. However I wouldn't say that genuine is always better. A certain genuine fitment Firestone tyre would remind you of that. Having said that I am sure that most genuine stuff is pretty good. I know there is some dodgy aftermarket gear for sale however are you saying that if I go to ARB or TJM and get a bullbar or towbar or go to Autobarn and get some roof racks that they are not as good as the genuine equivalents? As this stuff is the identical part from the same manufacturer but with different badges. How about car audio? When I worked in the car audio industry you could buy a genuine Ford CD stacker for about $1500 or buy an alpine one and a patch lead for about $500 or so. The same part but you required the patch lead as they changed the plugs. Other manufacturers where the same but didn't even bother changing the plug as they just changed the wires around in the same plug.
We just had the 3rd brake pedal switch put into an F250 at work yesterday. Our other F250 is onto its 2nd. Both are one year old vehicles. Although the genuine fitment tyres were good. So long as you didn't get them wet that is. Even the genuine diesel pump that would only pump when it feeled like it was a beauty.
Just about to have a new turbo fitted to one of the utes in an attempt to have a problem rectified. A $15000 part. Surely you could get an identical or better part for much less elsewhere?
So I guess that genuine is not always the best.

Good morning.
You are quite right about SOME products. Repco supply oe
water pumps; Bosch supply lights etc for Holden & Fords; TRW supply
suspension bits; Yes, and your Rhino racks are the same. The problem is that you don't know which ones are the 'same' and which aren't.
Sure, genuine are not always 100% either. But they are made to a standard and for the vehicle in question. Tolerances on any mass produced product will always be variable. Thats why they have warranties!
The other important factor to me is the support from genuine for warranty. As an example, if you buy an oil filter from the cheapies stores and it causes or contributes to engine failure, they will quite happily replace the filter. The same case with genuine and they will pay associated costs with the engine repairs. (Other than abuse etc as discussed on the
forum yesterday)
I guess at the end of the day to each his own, its just that i have sworn off buying cheap crap and have after many years also convinced my wife the same with household products as it is to me, false economy.
I should point out that I don't have money to throw around and need to be careful with my spending but will stand by my principles for quality.
