Hi,
Can any one out there tell me any reason why you couldnt replace the screw in plugs in the steering knuckle with grease nipples. Vehicle is a series 80 cruiser and doesnt really get much off road work.
Many thanks
H

An excellent idea. I did the same to an old MQ Patrooool I had yonks ago.
They normally come pre-packed, but that dries out in time.
A squirt of grease here and there does wonders for removing squeaks in the steering linkages.
Cheers

I have an 80 series GXL, so constant 4WD. All I have done in 290 000 k's is pull the plug out, pump grease in until fill, and replace plug. Grease ozes out around conector when cavity is full. So no damage to seals, or forcing grease past seals in to diff housing. Do it every 12 months
Had no problems so far. May be just lucky.
Be carefull using grease nipples, as you don't want to get to much pressure in there to damage axle seals

Hello Howard T,
When I remove the square plugs to replenish the grease, I poke a coat hanger wire down into the cavity to see the condition of the grease inside the steering knuckle. I use Valplex EP in the knuckle and Castrol LMM on the CV when I replace the seals, bearings and the like - a wonderfully messy task.
Some may not do a great deal of 4WD, but a bit of preventative maintenance can save on problems when the time comes when you may want to 4WD. The grease nipple would be a great idea for ease of grease insertion, however how long does it take to get that bolt out and pump grease in??
Happy Christmas and have a merry new year,

Sean,
It just gives me the s....ts that when I am under the vehicle with a grease gun in my hand it would be nice to do them at the same time.
Many thanks for everyones replies.
Best wishes to every one over Chrissie and have a very safe one.
