Hey Hump

Firstly - what motor..... the 4.2 or 3.0?

Didn't touch anything south of the head gasket?

When you had the head off - did you have it shaved....or just whack it back on? Reason I ask is that normally heads are (hopefully) usually chemically cleaned to remove all carbon deposits in the combusion chambers (and everywhere else) - which if you still have plenty of, then this could cause dieseling and pre-ignition anywhere during the induction stroke.

Did you put the timing chain back on correctly and know that you don't have a timing issue?

Chrispy,

The motor is a TD 42 and no nothing else was done to the motor, the head was cleaned up at home but there was no signs of carbon under the head. The correct gasket was obtained from Nissan (no.3). It runs alright at idle but when you give it a good stabbing it knocks bad but if you bring the revs up slow it does not do it. I was wondering how much fuel is supposed to leak off the injectors as there seems to be no fuel leaking back?( all this for a broken stud!)

Thanks
Hump

Hey Chrispy, I don't think they had a 3.0L diesel in '92.
They did have the 2.8L though. I think.

Did you take out the injectors prior to pulling the head off? Or did you leave the injectors in the head whilst you worked on the broken stud?

Bilbo,

They Stayed in there mate, it only took 5 mins to drill the stud out once i could get at it. The injectors were all cover up as well as everything else. We drove it into the shed and it was fine except for the exhaust noise.

Thanks

When you say the correct gasket, there are 3 thickness gaskets on the TD42 if thats the engine you have...

When does the knock occur? When you start it, or all the time?
coming from front or back of engine?

Didnt leave something in there did you?

Truckster,

No there is nothing in there, the knock devolops if you give it a quick stab at around 2000-3000 rpms. The gasket is the same gasket as the one that come off it a Number 3 the number is marked on the LHS front of the gasket I think 3 = 1.25". The Knock is around the NO 4 and 5 cylinders.

Thanks Hump

But not at Idle? so only knocks with a quick stab at 2000-3000...

is it a metallic clunk like piston hitting something, or more of a dull thud?

Check your valve clearances, sounds like a valve hitting a piston to me.

Yup - which is why I suggested that you re-check the way you re-installed the timing chain - if you accidently missed a tooth in either direction, you may have valves hitting piston crowns at TDC.......

To Chrispy, the td42 dont have timing chains, and to remove the head you wouldnt remove the front gear train, the petrol tb42 had chains.

Did you check the valves after fitting the head, the pushrods will be slightly different lengths (very small) which will put the clearences out.
Could also be a bad injector which will knock when running.
Rev engine up and crack the injector lines to eliminate that problem, the knock will go if that is the problem.

I need an engine for a truck build up im doing, How much!!

Patrol22

Think i should have, think we have found the problem, don't ask me why but when he pulled the injector lines off he pulled them off individually and when he put them back on he has put 2 lines on the back of the pump wrong, talking to a diesel pump shop and he said it will run without missing but will knock, when i get home from work big brother will have to fix it.
