Matt (W.A.)
Hey All,
Can someone please tell me roughly the weight of his or her storage draws i.e. Black widow/Outback if you know? Coz I want to build my own Again! but am concerned about the final weight of them empty? Has anyone got any suggestions on what to use for the construction? I don’t have a Welder. I’ve built some from good old MDF but was thinking of using marine Ply or QubeLock?
Any suggestions would be greatly greatly appreciated.
Oh and by the way
Have a safe and Merry Christmas Everybody

G'day Matt,
Built my own, never weighed them but guess about 40/50 kilos (empty). It is all the gear you put in them that will weight a lot more I suspect.
Can provide photos if you have an email address. The best tip I can give you is find a good sheet metal place, had a lot of the components bent out 2 mil gal - I thought quite reasonably priced. The whole shooting match cost me less then $500 (Ply, metal, bolts, bearings and marine carpet). Used the existing
seat mounting points to fix the unit to the car.
Kind regards

Thanks Truckster,
I couldn't open the link! It mentioned that it was temporarily unavailable? But was that the link to the Patrol with the QubeLock Setup?

Matt, I did the whole back of me Troopy, 2 drawers, 2 metres long, from 12mm structural waterproof ply, total weight 66kgs. I viewed this weight as just being another person in the vehicle.

Hi Matt,
I have the Black Widow Drawers with Fridge slide & the shipping weight was 80kg this included packaging which was a lot. I estimate the installed product somewhere in the vicinity of 65kg.

Cheers Dodger,
That seems to be the general Average I think so I’ll try to keep the weight to around 65kg's

Hi Matt,
Its worth considering cubloc secured to a 12ply base. I have a chuck wagon style setup for my GU which modified from my GQ. It holds 4 x 25 litre plastic boxes, 2 x 20 litre
water jerry's and black widow fridge slide. Its light (hold frame up with one finger) and secure having proved itself many times over the past 2 years in the rough. Undo 4 high tensile bolts and its easy to take out when not in use. All up cost about $200 pluse $270 for the slide. If you want some digi pix then email me and I will be happy to post them to you to give you some idea of my setup. My personal view is that a $1000 per drawer is not practical for my needs. Ive put this money towards other goodies for the truck.

Have a look at
mine here. You can download a PDF of the plans too from the site, including the tilting fridge slide. All up cost was about $400 but you could do them cheaper, they just wouldn't look as good without the checker plate ally and stuff.
My wife and I can lift them empty no problem so I would guess 35 kg roughly.
Hope this helps. There's plenty of pics too. (Like the replacement for the back
seat of the Navara to mount the fridge :o))
Dave's drawers and stuff
Merry Christmas,
Dave
