I've got a 100 Series, 2000 model which whenever i'm playing a cd constantly skips and jumps on tracks. First i thought it were my cd's, but the problem doesnt go away even on brand new ones. I bought a cd laser cleaning disc, but even still that hasnt helped. Has anyone come across the same situation? or does anybody know if you can just change the cd player part of the stereo, or does a whole new unit have to be fitted? If so, is it worth pricing the genuine Toyota satellite nav system?

Allan,

Have an 80 series with same symptoms with CD. Would jump/skip regularly when travelling, even on bitumen, and now won't even play when stationary. Because we need/want a good AM radio, haven't done anything about it, but use a Sony Discman hooked up to cassette player, for CD's. Am about to get an FM bizzo that transmits to FM radio, for playback, rather than the cassette doover.

The replacement double DIN units from Toyota are supposedly very pricey, and the aftermarket Pioneers, Clarions, Alpines single Din mean you can mount a UHF imediately underneath.

We tried the CD cleaning discs, with little success. Did work okay when the problem first started.

Won't comment on Sat/Nav, enough distractions on road now, without something else to distract the driver.

G'day Bob

I took have one of those Sony Discman players through the cassette and it works really well. I have noticed once that it missed a beat but that was along some rough corrugations. Normally skip comes from the unit and not the CD. On the whole it is OK and I can turn up the volume to distotrtion...lol

Thanks Bob,
i'll probably get a pioneer as i've got one in my 60 series and even on the roughest roads it hardly misses a beat.
Whats the go with getting into the dash of the new cruisers? the 60 series is easy with screws easy enough to see, but the 100 series looks like its just one big dash!

How's things, Willem? Trust you had a good Christmas, sounds like you have that Nissan purring now. Been some rain in this country lately, bit patchy, but has improved things for us. Diamantina has been running for about a month, so should be making its way down to Birdsville. Hasn't flooded yet though.

Surprising the sound that comes out of those little discman, "Top Gun" CD at high volume is good to clear the cobwebs of a long days drive!

Allan,
According to W'shop manual we have, you need a 'moulding remover" to remove the centre instrument surround(That's the one with vents on either side, and heater controls in lower half). It just unclips from around the radio unit. Then there are 4 screws to take out to remove the radio/CD, after unplugging aerial & power leads.

Have read on further in this manual, and you need to pry clips holding this surround in following order: (1) lower left side; (2) lower RHS;
(3) top LHS; (4) top RHS. Its not as hard as it sounds!!!

Good luck,

Lasers are very sensitive and have a very limited life span. Having an inbuilt system is a pain, because it will break down, more often sooner rather than later, and to have it repaired the whole thing has to come out, and will inevitably cost more than it is worth to repair (being more compact than home CD players, they're much more fiddly to work on).

Like Willie, we use a discman via a basic cassette player, and we seldom have skips and that includes much off road driving around the Simpson and corrugations around BV. The great thing is, when it dies, chuck it and buy a new one for around $60 which is probably about what it would cost to get a tech. to even look at a broken machine....

Ah, we do live in a throw away society!

Allan - I replaced mine (also 2000 model) with a pioneer head unit + six disc changer - used to have lots of problems with skipping on corrugations but have had zero problems with the pioneer.

Pulling the dash apart is easy once you locate those clips described in an earlier post.

Cheers,
Pete

Allen, I haven't had the problem yet but would love a Sat Nav system, but when I enquired the price was approx $4700.00 installed. That was with 2004 model Cruiser which I think has all the wiring in place don't know about 2000 model's wiring did Sahara's have Sat Nav then.

Allan ,
The CD in my 2001 TD jumps like crazy on corrugations and during my July desert trip got dust in it and it now makes grinding noises when I put a disc in .
The guy that put my new sexy speakers in the front doors, said not to bother trying to get it fixed as , I would be better off buying a new unit with a stacker and putting it under the front seat .
That's a problem though , as that's where I put all the useless rocks I collect !
Happy New Year ,
Willie .

Thanks heaps to everyone who has put in, so many choices to choose from.
I've just travelled from melbourne to toowoomba and still have to goto charters towers then back to melbourne again, so i'm thinking i need to do something within this next week. Perhaps a quickfix for now using a discman and tape adaptor, then when i get home suss out the other options.

Snatchem, was that price including a cd player/stacker with the sat system?

I hope everyone's had a Merry Christmas, and are looking forward to a Happy New Year!

Allan

Hi Allan get yourself a Pioneer MP3 player best price I got was $260
single din size and no need for a stacker, this was the best option from EO & other forums for off road use

Cheers
