How ya going
wondering if anyone can help
my GQ 4.2l Petrol 91 model has recently developed a major front end wobble
when traveling at over 70km per hour. Orriginally it didn't do it until 100km p/hr but it is getting worse. It isn't a tyre problem cause i have just had them replaced. Has anyone had this trouble, if so can you help me out. thanks, Mike

One possibility is lack of castor at front wheels. Used to insert tapered wedges between spring & axle to correct this but with coils needs different approach.
It can become very dangerous & loss of control can be severe.
Maybe theres other probs that GQ folk will pass on!

Mike,

Badly worn tie-rod ends will produce a wheel wobble as you described as well.

Also how long since the king-pin bearings have been replaced? Once the cups are worn badly, the rollers dropping in and out of wear grooves manifests as a wobble, or causes vehicle to wander, needing constant correction.

As Eric said, steering damper can cause similar probs. Best way to check tie-rod ends, is to park with one tyre up against kerb, and get somone to move steering wheel back and forwards, while you observe any movement in joints. If they are really worn then it's very obvious.

If king-pins are knackered, then you'll have to get your hands dirty!!

Hooroo...
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

first thing to do, put your rear wheels on the front go and drive it..

If the vib is worse when you hit the brakes, try panhard bushes.. That happed to mine few weeks ago.
Nissan will try and flog you the whole panhard, but the rear bushes are same as front.
I have part # if u need :)

Again as others have said, wheelbearings, caster bushes.

Mike GQ,

Had exactly the problem you describe. I spent a fortune on all kinds of supension/steering repairs/mods over a period of about 2 years before I found the problem.

It was a worn bush in the panhard rod. Cost me $50 and half an hour at Pedders in Dubbo.

I would start looking there.
