Cooper ATR's

Anyone tried the new Cooper ATR's yet? Looking to replace my old Cooper AT's (nearly finished my 2nd set now) and can't make up my mind which way to jump.

Had a 50mm Lovell's and Koni lift done on the GU as well as a castor kit and it doesn't steer all that nicely any more. The suspension place (highly reputable) reckons Coopers cause a lot of handling quirks on Patrols and there's not much you can do about it. Said I could put original Bridgestones back on it which would make it drive better on the road but they don't last which I already knew.

Tyre choice - the eternal question.......

Those MTR's certainly seem to get a good wrap from everyone but aren't they ludicrously expensive? A shop in Freo was quoting me nearly $100 more a tyre than Coopers.

Also, as I've mentioned before, noise and vibration concern me with an agressive mud pattern and the MTR looks about as mean and chunky as they come but looks can be deceiving.

A friend has had a set of ATR's fitted by Cooper's due to wty claim on his previous set as that particular tyre was not available.
They seem ok (I've been a passenger as well as a follower off road) BUT he reports that they pick up gravel and small pebbles constantly due to the tread design and seriously inflict stone damage on the vehicle.
Sometimes they continue to flick rocks out of the tread for kilometres after returning to the bitumen after running on the dirt.

Got a set of tyres on the Fairlane that do that and it is a right royal PITA. Spend alot of time with a key picking stones out.

Thanks for the heads up.

Caster kit with a 2inch lift?

Know dozens of people using coopers on GQ's and GU's and dont hear of handling issues just because of the tires - only things like shagged tires or out of round from new, and they werent coopers

Yeah, after the 'lift' (if you can call it that) the reading was zero degrees for both wheels and it was a total pig to drive - very twitchy and required constant concentration. Now running a couple of degrees and it is much better. Still has a swaying 'top heavy' feel to it unfortunately.

Re: Coopers - that's what I thought too. I've done 120,000km's on them (2 sets of AT's) and they've seemed OK to me. They are getting down a bit though.

Truckster - BFG AT's, Cooper ST's 305/70/16, or 305 MTR's? What's the consensus of opinion for GU's in your view.

G'day Diesel,

This probably won't be much help to you but anyway.

I bought a new Patrol last week and had the ATR's fitted. 275/70x17. I've not had time to take them offroad yet, but onroad they are marginally noisier than the OEM bridgstone 275/65x17's. When I say marginally, I'm not even certain that they're noiser, just seem to be able to hear them a touch more at 60km/h. I can't detect any other difference.

BTW - the Patrol is stock at the moment.

Thanks,

Aaron.
