Hi all for the festive season,

A good friend of mine has saved his pennies all year and is about to lash out on a Honda EU 10. He says he was looking through Parks Victoria info and reckons that it says generators are prohibited in the Murrindindi area we are going to in the new year. Well I cant even find a recognised Murrindindi park let alone generator info in one.
Does anyone have any info on parks rulings to generators in general and specifically in the Murrindindi area.
Thanks in anticipation
Andi

Don't know about Murrindindi but I believe gen sets are prohibited in ALL National Parks. Mind you if it's quiet and/or you're a _long_ way from others... who's to know?

Hmm I'm not getting it right!!

Type in http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/dse/index.htm to your browser and type Murrindindi Scenic Reserve in the search box, will bring up "Places to Visit" as top option. Selecting that will bring up among other things a camping guide for the Murrindindi Scenic Reserve.

I've made a soundproof box for mine- marine ply, with sound deadening foam and baffles plus a fan (obviously necessary) to circulate cool air.
I was talking to a ranger the other day with mine running behind the van- he had no idea it was running.
I showed him and he was extremely impressed- said it could run forever as long as no-one could hear it and no-one complained.

Hello Flash,
How about some details?
Maybe a drawing or picture etc.

Geoff.

Yes please Flash. What size/type is your Genny; how is it ventilated? Size? I'm sure lots of us would love to know, after the posts where noise from gennys got a bit heated!

Flash is hiding from us! Just let us know a few details; like how much room around the genny; how you have fitted the fan; how you have set up air intake and exhaust outlet. Please Flash - half of Australia wants to know. Motherhen

Briefly.....
A rectangular marine ply box, with hinged lid, large enough to fit the Honda 1 kva inverter with room to fit good quality sound deadening foam all around though not on the bottom (I got mine from my mates brother-in-law who builds boats.) and of course plenty of room for air-flow around the generator.
There's foam and foam- the stuff I got cost me well over $100 even at the right price- has foil on top and different layers of foam at different grades and some sort of Base material. I'm sure if you do a search on google you'll find heaps of info. Some foams are much cheaper though probably not as good. I decided to use the best I could get to get the best results.

Then a hole is cut at the bottom of the "cool end" about 25cm wide X 12cm high.
The same on the other end (exhaust end of the generator) except it's near the top.
Then an extra "box" or "add-on" is fitted onto each end (effectively enlarging the original box by about 14cm each end)- one for the exhaust with an open bottom and also foam lined- ie: the exhaust comes out near ground level.
The inlet end add-on box has a 240 volt heavy duty ceiling exhaust fan (blowing inwards obviously) fitted which blows plenty of air through-ie: in and then down through the smallish hole at the inlet end of the main box.
Net result is a quite bulky box but it DRAMATICALLY reduces the noise of the already quiet Honda Eu 10- maybe by about 60% though I don't have a decibel meter.
Obviously it's not totally silent- but quiet enough not to annoy anybody especially with the ecothrottle doing it's thing.
The original idea was not mine, rather I've just tinkered and expiremented - I've seen similar at the van show a few years ago though that was aluminium and a few home made ones on the road.
Total cost including good ply(about half inch) , foam and fan approx maybe $300 I guess - but well worth the trouble. If I included labour of course the price would be a lot more........
You may be able to get your ply and even foam cheaper, but I wouldn't use a cheap ceiling exhaust fan as they don't blow enough air. ( I tried one!) I think mine cost me about 70 odd dollars from memory- it blows plenty of air through and should last well, as it's industrial quality.

Silence is golden! Cheers

Ok Here are the people that make these things......... Company called "CEMQUIP Power Equipment" Unit 2, 7 Lear Jet Drive Caboolture QLD 4510 - Email cemquip@eis.net.au - Phone (07)54983500 or mobile 0413790166. I swear you cannot hear the genset running inside these enclosures, even bigger Generators. They are really neat, the lid ends up being the fuel tank, holding heaps of fuel for really long runnig times. They have special fan setups to keep the engine cool and keep the sound in. I saw them at the Dubbo 4x4 Show........and could not believe the generator was running when the guy opened the lid!!! They have all shapes and sizes..........and no I do not work for them! John
