Briefly.....
A rectangular marine ply box, with hinged lid, large enough to fit the Honda 1 kva inverter with room to fit good quality sound deadening foam all around though not on the bottom (I got
mine from my mates brother-in-law who builds boats.) and of course plenty of room for air-flow around the generator.
There's foam and foam- the stuff I got cost me
well over $100 even at the right price- has foil on top and different layers of foam at different grades and some sort of Base material. I'm sure if you do a search on google you'll find heaps of info. Some foams are much cheaper though probably not as good. I decided to use the best I could get to get the best results.
Then a hole is cut at the bottom of the "cool end" about 25cm wide X 12cm high.
The same on the other end (exhaust end of the generator) except it's near the top.
Then an extra "box" or "add-on" is fitted onto each end (effectively enlarging the original box by about 14cm each end)- one for the exhaust with an open bottom and also foam lined- ie: the exhaust comes out near ground level.
The inlet end add-on box has a 240 volt heavy duty ceiling exhaust fan (blowing inwards obviously) fitted which blows plenty of air through-ie: in and then down through the smallish hole at the inlet end of the main box.
Net result is a quite bulky box but it DRAMATICALLY reduces the noise of the already quiet Honda Eu 10- maybe by about 60% though I don't have a decibel meter.
Obviously it's not totally silent- but quiet enough not to annoy anybody especially with the ecothrottle doing it's thing.
The original idea was not
mine, rather I've just tinkered and expiremented - I've seen similar at the van show a few years ago though that was aluminium and a few home made ones on the road.
Total cost including good ply(about half inch) , foam and fan approx maybe $300 I guess - but
well worth the trouble. If I included labour of course the price would be a lot more........
You may be able to get your ply and even foam cheaper, but I wouldn't use a cheap ceiling exhaust fan as they don't blow enough air. ( I tried one!) I think
mine cost me about 70 odd dollars from memory- it blows plenty of air through and should last
well, as it's industrial quality.
Silence is golden! Cheers
