Hi all, I'm having problems insuring all our gear while travelling around Aus next year.

I can obtain camping insurance for most of the gear - except the expensive electric stuff like cameras, videos, etc. (Note also that most trailer insurance only covers items while they are locked away and then 'forcilbly removed'. TCIS is a better policy on this front at least)

Normally you can take out an extra policy on your home insurance to cover the electric stuff BUT you cannot if your house is RENTED out at the same time (according to Suncorp this is).

Anyone found an insurer that will cover these items one way or another? The only other approach is to take out travel insurance but typically that's expensive and is more focussed on the health side of things.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated!

AND if your house is not rented and happens to be vacant for a term longer than 3 months then you have no insurance coverage either.

Juma - yes you can get that sort of insurance.

We were with Mutual Community (in SA) I think it is AXA insurance in other states.

You can get accidental breakage cover for your contents which covers all contents outside the house as well as inside - also is not defined events - can cover you for losing something, breaking it (like putting a chair leg through the TV) etc. Costs about 70% more than normal contents. Does not cover motor vehicle accessories that are only for use in vehicles (although my ENGEL is covered because is also 240 volt - got that in writing.)

I am now with Western QBE - you can specify items over $1000 you want insured (like photographic, engel, fishing gear, diving gear etc) or get a miscellaneous cover which we have. All covered annywhere outisde the house - car, trailer, boat etc. Up to $5000 covered, limit of $1000 per item, no need to specify. This may be more the type of cover you are after. I'm sure most other companies will do this type of insurance, so look around and you will find that you want.
p.s. our policy with Western QBE only costs $174 per year and has a $25 excess.

Hope this helps

Hi D-Jack, no joy with Western QBE either - you must have a permanent address for the contents cover to work and if you've rented your house house this means that you haven't....damn!

I'm checking out travel insurance now because trailer or camping equipment insurance doesn't cover electrical items.

Many thanks anyway.

Cheers, Mark

I was with AAMI for my house & contents but they would not cover my contents whilst travelling (camping).

After a lot of research I ended up with Westpac - for the contents I took the full coverage which covers any loss - anywhere.

The premium cost was higher of course but not too much so and I felt a lot more comfortable whilst camping and caravanning.

Hi Willy, thanks for the info - I tried Wespac who advised that their personal effects cover is not applicable when the house is rented out. Basically you must have a permanent resident address and a car travelling round Aus is not included :-)

Mucho thanks anyway.

I have my Camper insured with Western QBE, for a fixed price + I added contents to the policy. I took this out because i herd someone got thers niked from there drive way. I couldnt aford this so i insured + forgot about it as you do. Then about 9 months later we had a fire witched started from a gas leek. It took some fighting (for the contents) but we were covered inc. all damaged acc (total loss was about 4-5K) Just REMEMBER that it needs to be IN WRITING for it to be covered.
My camper cost about 6K but with all the stuff you take (ctothing per person $250+) I had it insured it for $11k.
PS get it in writing.

Hi Juma,
Had the same problem 2 years ago when setting out to travel. Wish I could offer some advice but all of our enquiries failed to deliver an adequate policy to cover our life on wheels. Ended up taking a risk of being out of pocket if the s***t hit the fan. I wish you luck anyway.
