After looking around I have taken the plunge today and brought a 80 serries landcrusier petrol 1994 model for $16000. Its pretty stock got tow bar sidesteps and bullbar. So now the customerzing starts.
what to do first is the question tyres are AT's has a lift kit already.
What are the main areas I should look at problem wise as this rig will do alot of travelling over the next few months the poor old terracan is going to fill left out sitting at home and only visiting the supermarket but as the rain falls here by the weekend we may need a 4x4 just to get to the shops.
The wife is on my back as she cant se the need for 2 4x4 in the familly but she does not understand that a man can never have enough toys and the lc80 is a real boys toy

Tim D.

Good move, I too have a 94 Petrol (Manual) and think it is great.

Exceptionally reliable vehicle with a few things to keep in mind.

1. Service wheel bearings regularly and is wirthwhile having the front cv's greased.
2. Have a close look at your radiator top tank - if it has what appear to be very fine cracks along it it would be wise to have the top tank replaced - they split.
3. power steer pump leaks are fairly common - replacing the seals is a reasonably easy procedure.
4. rear engine main seal leak fairly common
5.front hub seals leak - replacing seals is temporary only - if it is only a minor leak it is not worth worrying about.
6. if yours is manual and difficult to shift gears cold or intermittantly, there are various gear oils avail to help reduce "Shift baulk". I use Synforce "All Terrain 80"
and it has made a great improvement.
7.They give the LHF tyre a fairly hard time on the outer shoulder - regular tyre rotations should be performed to give good tyre life.
8. DO NOT snatch or tow in reverse or load the 80 up in any way in reverse - the front diff will go BANG.

Generally, service it regularly and look after it well and it will look after you too.
P.S How many k's is on yours for 16 Large.

Regards

thanks for the info thats the sort of feed back I was looking for.
For your info it has 31000 on the clock was a little worried about that but the motor seems fine but only time will tell. The vehicle is very clean tidy 4x4 for its age no dents in the body or scratches no under body damage very clean engine bay but red dust everywhere. so these vehicles are constant 4x4 what is the centre diflock for then and when do you use it

Hi Tim, would recommend a days training for you and your new toy. You will be surpried just how capable these vehicles treally are when taught how to use them correctly. A simple way to explain a center diff. A diff gets its name by allowing 2 wheels on the same axle to spin at different speeds because the outside wheel travells futher than the inside wheel it therefore must turn faster. Without a diff it would be virtually impossible to steer or turn our cars. A constant 4wd vehicle has three diffs, the third is in the driveline and makes the front and rear tail and prop shafts turn at the same speed when locked. On your car the center diff should lock automatically in low range. I always lock my center diff when driving on any loose surface specially at speed on dirt roads. Never have your center diff locked on sealed surfaces. Congrats at joining the Tojo Club.

Good on ya Tim. You have bought a well known and reliable marque at a resaonable price

Tell your missus that we have three 4x4's......Xtrail, Patrol Diesel, Landruiser Diesel......would never entertain a 2wd again.....unless of course it is a classic or vintage, just for playing with :o)
