Hi Guys
Took the G.P.S. with me on a trip to
Cairns yesterday after reading a recent post regarding GU speedo readings.
Having just fitted new BFGs I find my speedo is out by 8 clicks at 100ks G.P.S. only reads 92k.
This means my odometer would be out as
well as my fuel consumption calculations
With 6 months warranty left and odometer reading 51000ks does this mean Nissan will adjust the reading after 60000ks
I THINK NOT.. And what about resale value down the track when speedo is out by almost 10%
I suppose the easy fix for that is to change gearing on speedo
Yeah... think I will do that... so disregard everything I just said.
Just wanted to post something LOL
Regards Poppy

Poppy,
This is normal for most vehicles, especially Jap' built. Easiest fix is to buy larger tyres, about 8% larger, LOL

Poppy,
I have an 04 patrol ute, and have fitted 285/75x16 tyres, and now my speedo is reading 5% out, but its reading under. So 100ks on my speedo is really 105.
I dont have a GPS, so I just did a few runs past the milage post south of
townsville.

Poppy,
My GU wears 265/75R16 Cooper STs and reads about 6% the opposite way....IE, speedo shows 100klicks and gps shows 106 klicks. I'm lucky in one way cos the odometer shows 145,000 at present, but I know that it's actually done nearly 154,000 in reality......(struth hope nobody on here remembers that i said all this when i go to sell the ol' girl in about 10 years' time).
But it means i gotta watch the boys in blue and trick myself into driving "below" the speed limit.

Forget about fiddling with the speedo .......... unless you like porridge.
That's an absolute no no ... go to gaol trick.
I think the allowable error for speedos is up to 5% which is pretty
well par for the course. As Rolande suggested, if you're really concerned fit larger dia tyres ... if they'll fit without taking to the guards with an axe.
Cheers

The vehicle goes into ARB
Townsville on Tuesday for a 2 inch lift so larger tyres may fit then, but only fitted new BFGs last Friday
Think I can live with speedo reading too slow at the moment

Im shocked that people think that mass produced items like speedos that are only painted on to the backing, would be 100% accurate.
Mine says 100 im doing 110 but I know it so drive at 90 on the speedo to keep the bacon happy..
Anyway yours will be showing less kms than the car has done, so I'd leave it alone, resale will be better with 450,000 instead of 500k+

Agree 100% Truckster,
I too am amazed that many people assume their speedo is correct.
The simple facts are:
1. Speedos are virtually never correct from day 1 when you buy a new car.
2. Most, but not all OVERREAD to "err" on the safe side.
3. As your tyres wear this error will usually increase.
4. Different size and even brand tyres will again change the equation.-maybe worse, maybe better.
If you drive close to the speed limit, or slightly over, without KNOWING how accurate your speedo is, and get a ticket, don't complain.
Eg: my sons car has a speedo which underreads slightly- we tested it with my GPS after he bought it and now he KNOWS not to drive even a kilometre over the posted limit or he risks getting a ticket. (When he's doing 100 indicated he's actually doing about 106.5.)
If anybody takes offence to the way this is presented as someone did on another post- tough- but take responsibility for your actions and know the vehicle you are driving- simple! If you haven't checked your own speedo- then drive a bit slower and you won't get a speeding fine.- simple!
Cheers

Hi, Picked up an earlier post on the subject of speedo error. Jaycar put out a kit ( 40 odd bucks) that allows you to dial in correction. Only works with electronic speedo's.

GeeTee,
Patrol's mostly fly-by-wire nowdays so have adjustment at the rear of the speedo to fix this already.

Check the speedo and odo separately and you will usually find 2 different errors;
Typically the the speedo will read 5-10% higher than actual but
the odo will be pretty close - plus or minus 3 %
Heaven forbid that somebody would suggest that the manufacturers are doing this deliberately.

Had the same with my patrol
Dont like speedo's being incorrect, some people do. Check your speedo gear 10min job. If yours is a black 17 tooth , change it to a yellow 16 tooth
part Number NI-32743-VB016. $54.65. you will need FINE circlip pliers to remove clip on end of cog . worked for me.
