G'day,
I last drove this road about 2 years ago, but I doubt its changed much. Corrugated dirt for 90 % of the way. Rain is the only thing that closes roads out there, and they haven't had any, so it should be open but check with the shires (Yilgarn/Southern Cross and Kondinin) first. You can follow it with a country roads directory and a good sense of direction, but having done it that way I wouldn't recommend it - its amazing how remote it is out there. My advice would be to get a 1:100 000 or 1:250 000 topo map of the area and make a set of trip notes with distances between and directions of turnings - you'll have to make a few - so you know where you are (thats what I do now with any new trips). Out there you'll be lucky to have signs with road names, let alone direction signs telling you when to turn.
All this sounds a bit over the top for a road just outside the wheatbelt, but take care not to get lost, and you should enjoy the trip.
Cheers, Alex.

Beauges, this road is a gravel/dirt "highway" now. It will be as adventurous as going along any SW WA gravel road. It is remote but well travelled and would need a SIGNIFICANT amount of rain to close it. I will be coming thru there at the end of September if your not going before then and give you a full report. Skippyking,a report on how the road is at the end september would be much appreciated as we plan to travel along there early november. We are travelling from Leinster to Collie and want to take a break in our trip.So taking a peek at Wave rock is on the cards. Thanks Beauges

Beauges, came down it Friday, very few corrugations, wide, would need significant rain to close it. Average speed with camper trailers, 90k's. Bitumen about 20k's from Hyden. If it rains out there, check with the Shires of Kondinin and Yilgarn for road opened/closed. There are signs at each end. Have fun. SK

TRAVELED FROM HYDEN NORTH TO BOUNTY GOLD THEN BACK SOUTH TO VARLEY YESTERDAY AND THE CONDITION OF THE ROAD IS REALY GOOD. NORTH OF BOUNTY GOLD/HOLLAND TRACK TURN OFF IS NOT NORMALLY A DRAMA EVEN AFTER RAIN CAUSE THE MINE VEHICLES USED THE ROAD TO SOUTHERN CROSS A FAIR BIT SO ITS KEPT UP WELL BUT CAN GET A BIT bleepY IF IT RAINS SOUTH OF THE FORESTONIA CROSS ROADS. DONT SPOSE LOOKING AT THE WEATHER MAP IT WILL EVER RAIN AGAIN ANYWAY.
